Weber shellacked the ISU Bengals at home last Saturday, but ISU was not without a couple of brights spots despite the fact that highly-regarded ISU QB Russel Hill did not play. His backup, Kyle Blum (#8) actually played very well, especially early on and marched the Bengals 80 yards for a 7-0 lead after ISU had only scored 3 points TOTAL in the first two ballgames. ISU went up 14-0 before Weber got their offense untracked. This was the story of two young teams who played undisciplined football, especially in the second half as the field began to look like a banana plantation with all the yellow flying everywhere. Weber's star RB Trevyn Smith had a huge day statistically, and did most of his damage in the second half as the Wildcats began to pull away from ISU who lost their offensive rhythm totally after half time.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Weber State Conference: Big Sky Columnist: Steve Martin
Game Notes
Beau Hadley 15 6' 0.0" 185 4.60 S 2010: Very nice college safely who is a smart football player. ST leader. Team leader. Always in the right place in pass defense and has solid tackling form. Shows hands for the pick. A football player, pure and simple, who probably lacks the measurables to get more than a quick camp look. GRADE: Slightly positive
Trevyn Smith 25 5' 8.8" 209 4.53 HB 2010: A tough little FCS tailback who is very productive at this level. Started slowly in this game, but as the ISU defense began to wear down, he simply took over. Mature. Follows his blocks. OK spin move. Nice short yardage style, and gets in the endzone. OK hands. Powerful between the tackles at the level. All depends on what opportunities he gets (or doesn't get) in the post-season and on his testing numbers. GRADE: Positive
Kevin Linehan 42 6' 2.4" 255 4.85 DE 2010: Pass rusher, who isn't much for setting the edge. Didn't get a full evaluation as he went out with a shoulder pretty early on and did not return. GRADE: INC
Josh Morris 24 5' 11.6" 181 4.55 CB 2010: Highly touted and recently interviewed extensively by us. Good kid, and looks the part. Athletic and has the measurables. Buchanan watch list. Plays a tight bump and run, but seems to lack some instincts. Was beaten by lesser players in this one a couple of different times. Plays mostly bump and run. Needs technique work and more opportunities to go 1-on-1. Flashes ability in coverage. Aggressive tackler who hits like a safety. Put the nail in the ISU coffin with a late pick. Needs to be coached up. Rough diamond. GRADE: Neutral
Tim Toone 81 5' 9.5" 165 4.50 WR 2010: Strong little receiver who plays with passion. Can get the job done returning the ball to, both as a PR and a WR. Looks like a classic Z. Strong for his size. Above average hands and routes. Adjusts very well to the off-target ball. Reminds me of Davone Bess in a lot of ways. GRADE: Positive
Cody Nakamura 23 6' 0.4" 235 4.60 TE 2010: Has added 25 pounds and is now playing a move-TE-like slot. Was Weber's most-involved offensive threat early. Went out with an injury near half (knee sprain) and did not return. Tweener with hands. GRADE: Positive
Kyle Mutcher 53 6' 2.4" 301 5.10 C 2010: DNP...Was he beaten out, or is he injured??
College: Idaho State Conference: Big Sky Columnist: Steve Martin
Game Notes
Russel Hill 17 5' 11.0" 193 4.76 QB 2011: DNP. Injured.
Clint Knickrehm 5 5' 10.5" 224 4.55 HB 2010: UNder-utilized. Has some real up-the-gut toughness. Bounces off tacklers and spins for yardage. Want to see him play a little. ISU is NOT being coached very well right now, and frustration may be setting in all around. Knickrehm has some talent, but I doubt we'll ever see what he is truly capable in this offense. GRADE: Neutral
Jaron Taylor 1 5' 10.6" 183 4.50 WR 2010: Stands out. Really knows how to get open and is ISU's offense. Can't do it all, but what he does do is pretty good. Specializes in getting open with a variety of dekes and shows precision in his routes. Not very big, ibut will climb the ladder. Above average hands. WIll he be checked out of existence at the LOS at the next level? Not sure how well he projects, but I like what I see overall. Tracks the ball well. Effective on screens. Makes people miss after the catch. Sells out for the catch. GRADE: Positive
Trevor Messersmith 44 6' 2.3" 250 4.80 TE 2010: DNP
Demetrius Amos 98 6' 0.5" 322 5.15 DT 2010: Kind of an enigma. Bad body. Looks like Andre Smith playing defense. Despite all that, he is a load, and moves it very well for a big man. Makes plays all over...in the backfield, down the line. Reminds me of a mini Refrigerator Perry. Plays a lot and seems to have the necessary stamina. How does he do it? Is he tall enough to do much at the next level? Gets under people and gets through the double team. Not a finesse guy, and lacks moves. Like I said, an enigma. GRADE: Slightly positive
Lance Cartwright 71 6' 5.2" 295 5.40 OG 2010: Looked OK when he was playing in the first half, then was not in there in the second. Didn't see him yanked. No idea what happened. A bit top heavy. Needs more musculature. Willingly blocks downfield. Seems to keep motoring to the whistle most of the time. On the ground a lot, and appears to lack balance. Seems to be a streaky player who can really run block when focused and its his down to play. Tools...must lack head. GRADE: Neutral
OTHER NOTES:
Weber: All Big-Sky QB Cameron Higgins did well but started poorly. He has some talent, but I don't see NFL level anything
ISU: K Jarret Huk (#16) made a 55-yarder against Oklahoma on his first FG attempt of the year. He was lined up to try a 47-yarder for his only attempt late in this one, and ISU was called for a 5-yard penalty. I said "Oh well, so much for that scoring opportunity," but he promptly nailed it from 52, and seemed to have enough on it for 60. They are saying he's kicked 65 in practice. Added to the database.
Junior LB A.J. Storms (#30) is one heckuva a football player. Gives great effort and finds the ball.
