The Pirates of Hampton University (1-1) got off to a slow start Saturday night against the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M (2-0) and suffered a tough 31-24 loss.
Despite their slow start, the Pirates were able to finish the game with 317 yards of total offense, led by running back and return man LaMarcus Coker. Coker finished the night with 122 yards rushing and 148 return yards and two touchdowns. Alabama A&M was led by Kevin Atkins who passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in Alabama A&M's 31-24 win over Hampton.
Atkins completed 18 of 30 passes for 303 yards for the Bulldogs. He has passed for 535 yards and five touchdowns in two games this season.
Thomas Harris had 10 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns for Alabama A&M (2-0).
Ulysses Banks ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs amassed more than 400 yards of total offense for the second straight game.
Hampton
Offense:
QB Herbert Bynes, Hampton, 6'23/4" 237 r-Jr DNP was still a week away from playing and his loss was felt as the Pirates had very little success passing. I believe he may have had the flu.
#23 TB LaMarcus Coker 5'9 7/8 204 4.46[est] a former Vol, who was involved in every good thing that happened on offense. In addition to: 122 yards rushing and 148 return yards and two touchdowns, he showed good hands be reeling in 2 catches fo 64 yards including a flashy 61 yard catch and run. He's at least as good as Bernard Scott and has a slightly shorter rap sheet, I'd take him in the 6th.
Jr. WR #3 Reginald Hicks 6'3 1/4" 221 4.63 [est] Smooth possession WR with a bit of David Terrell about him. Had 4 snags for 65 yards and showed a little R.A.C on a 21 yarder.
Defense:
Jr. P #29 Jahmal Blanchard 6'2" 203 may be the best HBCU P prospect since Greg and Vince Coleman his six punts 6 averaged 43 yards with 3 inside the 20 and to TBs, he's a very good athlete with a [hand timed]40 YD DASH: 4.42 VERTICAL: 34" and 40 YD SHUTTLE: 4.12 late rounder or PUDFA.
#38 LB Brandon Roundtree 6'0 5/8" 222 4.66 Solid run and hit LB, had 4 solos 4 helpers and 1 sack, might make a a squad as a ST ace. UDFA.
#2 CB 5'8 7/8 181 James Butts is very good against the run, however against the pass he has a tendency to peek in the backfield, get lost and take false steps his James Butts 5 solo tackles and the 3 helpers were impressive in run support but too little and too late in the passing game.
Notes-
RS Sophomore FS #6 Ricardo Silva 6'0 5/8 209 4.58 [est] was very active posting 4 solo and 4 me too stops as well as 1/2 a TFL. If he improves in coverage and runs well in workout he has a chance to be a late rounder or PUDFA someday.
Alabama A&M
Offense-
#3 PK Jeremy Licea 5'6 3/4" 158 He is likely the best PK in all of HBCU Football, however he will need to improve his kickoffs and/or FG distance, he is accurate but a 46 yard career kicking offs that are often between the 14 and the 8 with average hang time won't get you into most camps. UDFA.
#5 Jr QB 6'03/8" 214 Kevin Atkins is a bit like Jeff Blake, a tad undersized and sometime has better touch on balls traveling 40 yards through the air than 14, he's mobile and while hitting on 18 of 30 tosses for 303 yards 2 TDs he also ran for one and had 7 totes for 24 net yards after the 3 from a 1 sack is extracted. If Atkins continues to improve by this time next year he would at least be a PUDFA.
1 WR 5'11 1/2 191 4.56 [est.] Thomas Harris had a career day: 10 catches 224 yards 2 TDs, to include a very nice 40 yard effort. Harris is a bit like a cross between former Eagle WRs Todd Pinkston and Fred Mithchell, slight of build more quick than fast, but able to gain separation with a solid 2nd gear. He also has return skills and deserves a good look in a camp as a late rounder or a PUDFA.
#6 8 C X a v i e r Ma n u e l 6'0 3/8" 322 5.26 [est.] was the most impressive lineman for either team he is powerful quick and hard to trick, he can pull out and lead in to the running game and stones pass rushers. PUDFA unless he has a great post season.
#17 TB U l y s s e s B a n k s 5'9" 198 4.58 [est] Reminds me of Sammy Winder, not blazing fast or truly powerful but he gets it done and his KOR contributions together with his ability to add depth at TB should make him a PUDFA.
Defense
#54 DE Jeremy Maddox 6'0" 264 4.79 [est.] 4 take down 2 helping hands including 2 sacks, likely will need to prove he can play standing up and has gained almost 20 pounds in the past 12 months, he may be served to get smaller and quicker unless he goes to a team that likes Mathis/Freeney type small DEs. Late rounder or PUDFA.
Notes-
Sophomore OLB Willie Fuller acted like a pocket-sized [5'10 1/2" 217] 4.74 [est.] William Fuller, ringing up 4 tackles, 1 assist including 3.5 sacks. He is like Dexter Coakley, but perhaps stronger, truly bears watching.
