If this was meant to be the acid test for both teams then Alabama definitely showed that they are contenders again this year and Bobby Petrino's Arkansas showed that they still have a lot of work to do. The Alabama defense strangled Arkansas' offense and shut down QB Ryan Mallett in what was a very impressive performance from the Crimson Tide.

Freddie Fairchild 44 6' 2.0" 220 4.50 LB 2010
Dismissed from team. Note to self: remove from database.
Ben Cleveland 86 6' 4.0" 250 4.75 TE 2010
Didn't see him in the game. Arkansas very rarely use 2 tight ends and being behind DJ Williams means Cleveland probably won't see much playing time. Grade: Unavailable
Mitch Petrus 66 6' 3.5" 295 5.05 OG 2010
Petrus, and indeed the rest of the Arkansas offensive line, came across a very good defense and struggled. The Razorbacks couldn't get anything going in the running game and failed to give Ryan Mallett any time to make his throws. Grade: Negative
Ryan Mallett 15 6' 6.0" 250 5.00 QB 2011
Never really got going in this one. He was under pressure all night, spent most of the time being flushed out of the pocket and couldn't get into any sort of rhythm. Completed just 12 out of 35 throws and was picked off. Also sacked thrice. Grade: Negative
Michael Smith 21 5' 7.0" 175 0.00 HB 2010
Why Bobby Petrino doesn't use this kid more I have no idea. Looks like the best offensive prospect on this team by a mile. Picked up 61 yards on 12 carries and showed off his quickness. Likes to get outside and can beat LBs and DBs with his explosiveness. Showed good patience and awareness on a couple of good runs too. Grade: Positive
D.J. Williams 45 6' 2.0" 250 0.00 TE 2011
D.J. is a good all-round tight end though his receiving ability is undoubtedly his stronger suit. Mallett checked down to him a couple of times and he showed good hands. Alabama dealt with him well though and didn't leave him open at all. Grade: Neutral
Wendel Davis 10 6' 1.0" 222 0.00 LB 2010
Started at the MLB position and had a good solid game. Showed good awareness and ability to read the play on a few occasions. Broke up a screen pass thanks to that very characteristic. Lacks the ideal size you'd want from an inside linebacker and may be more of a strongside player in the pros. Grade: Neutral
Malcolm Sheppard 96 6' 2.0" 280 0.00 DE 2010
Despite being listed here as a DE, Sheppard plays inside at DT now and looks good at it. Made a nice TFL when he showed his athleticism by hurdling a blocker and throwing himself into the tackle. May be the best one-gap DT in the SEC. Grade: Slightly positive

Javier Arenas 28 5' 9.0" 193 4.38 CB 2010
I keep expecting to be disappointed by Arenas, mainly because of his height I think and yet every time I watch him he just keeps making plays. Not really tested in coverage since his front 7 did such a good job but got to Mallett twice on CB Blitzes and averged 15 yards per punt return on the day too. Time for someone to come out and say this I guess -- top 100 material. Grade: Positive
Terry Grant 29 5' 10.0" 190 4.45 HB 2011
Whatever Terry Grant had, well, its gone. He's been usurped by a couple of freshmen on the depth chart and even his kick returns are well below par. Grade: Negative
Justin Woodall 27 6' 1.0" 220 4.55 S 2010
Not really tested at safety today. Had one pick after the ball was tipped but didn't really have a lot to do. Grade: Incomplete
Terrence Cody 62 6' 5.0" 365 0.00 NT 2010
Mount Cody was at his best in this game. The two-gap NT created holes for his team mates and helped generate a lot of pressure on Ryan Mallett and the Arkansas offense. Also showed he's not a one-trick pony by flushing Mallett out of the pocket and chasing right out to the sideline on one play. Kept up with the Arkansas QB too! Grade: Positive
Julio Jones 8 6' 4.0" 210 0.00 WR 2012
Only 2 catches on the day, though 1 of those was a 50 yard touchdown grab. Showed willingness to help his team out and make some blocks on run plays. Possibly still hampered a little by an injury. Grade: Neutral
Rolando McClain 25 6' 4.0" 249 0.00 LB 2011
What more can I say about McClain. He continues to make plays time and again and shows excellent technique and work rate all day. Will be a star on Sundays. The sort of player offenses have to worry about. Grade: Positive
Kareem Jackson 3 5' 11.0" 192 0.00 CB 2011
Arkansas threw at him early and he responded in the best possible manner. Looked very solid in coverage, watched the ball all the way and just always knew where his man was. Also flew around the ball on run plays and made some nice stops in the backfield. Knows how to tackle too. Very impressive. Grade: Positive
Leigh Tiffin 0' 0.0" 0 0.00 K 2010
Connected on 5/5 extra points. Didn't attempt any FGs. Grade: Incomplete
Other Notes:
Tide ILB Donta Hightower should be in the database (how did I miss him?). He and McClain are dangerous! Left the game early with an injury though and it didn't look good.
QB Greg McElroy looked like he had the same sort of smarts as JP Wilson but with a stronger arm. If he keeps playing as efficiently as this and as well then he's going to be considered a late round pick by someone.
