An ugly game right from the get-go, especially on the part of Maryland. Turnovers, penalties, dropped passes, etc., etc., etc... The Terps actually kept it close right up until the end, but eventually their mistakes killed them and the Scarlet Knights wore them down and pulled away.
Rutgers
Jack Corcoran FB 19 6' 1.0" 230lbs 4.64 2010 - did little to change my impression of him from the Cincinnati game. Didn't carry the ball or catch any passes. Had an 11yd KR return as an upman on a squib kick. Gives decent effort and gets in the way as a blocker, but doesn't move anybody off the ball. Didn't really get any opportunities in this game, but doesn't flash anything but average athleticism. Grade - neutral
Anthony Davis OT 75 6' 6.0" 325lbs 5.30 2011 - see below
Kevin Haslam OG 78 6' 7.0" 295lbs 5.27 2010 - see below
Ryan Blaszczyk C 61 6' 4.0" 295lbs 5.28 2010 - as a unit the Scarlet Knight OL showed much better than they did versus the Bearcats. Davis once again lined up at LT and Haslam was at RT. Pass protection was an issue, as Rutgers only ran 16 passing plays and gave up three sacks, one of those by Haslam. As the game wore on they did do an excellent job of establishing the run, utilizing their size and their very good movement skills for their size to their advantage. Davis is clearly the most talented of the trio, but I still think he should stay in school. Haslam looks like a finesse LG at the next level. Blaszczyk could stick as a backup in the NFL. Grade - slightly positive
Ryan D'Imperio MLB 44 6' 3.0" 240lbs 4.76 2010 - D'Imperio was also more active and impressive in this game, tallying four solos, one assist, and two pass breakups. One of those breakups was very far downfield, far further downfield than any MLB had a right to be, and he damn near got an INT out of it. I'm not saying he looks like a young Brian Urlacher out there, but that was impressive. Good instincts. Solid tackler. Back when the Draft was a two-day event, I'd say he was worth a first day pick. Grade - positive
Devin McCourty CB 21 5' 11.0" 185lbs 4.47 2010 - another Scarlet Knight who looked better today than against Cincinnati. He did give up a TD and missed a tackle or two, but he shows pretty good raw skills. Totaled four solos, two assists, and the pick. Also showed well on PR coverage. Shows good speed and leaping ability. Grade - positive
Maryland
Chris Turner QB 10 6' 4.0" 220lbs 4.85 2010 - started off the game by throwing a pick that was returned for a TD. Wound up throwing three interceptions on the day, versus just one TD, though he did complete about two-thirds of his passes. Good arm, but he looks like he has to work to get it downfield or put extra mustard on the ball (as opposed to Jarrett Brown last week, who looked like he could just flick his wrist and get the ball 50 yards downfield without thinking about it). Bird-dogs his receivers way too much. Looks smaller than his size. Above average mobility and accuracy. Has a long way to go before he's more than a #3 in the NFL. Grade - slightly negative
Darel Scott HB 23 5' 11.0" 200lbs 4.45 2011 - failed to impress this day. Never got going. Nine carries for 26yds with a long of just 6yds. Caught one pass for -1yd. Didn't return any kicks or punts. Had a fumble in this game, which is apparently a recurring problem for him. Not very big or powerful. Showed little make-you-miss ability, and never got the chance to show his speed. Grade - negative
Cory Jackson FB 38 6' 1.0" 245lbs 4.65 2010 - not really used as a weapon (two carries for four yards), but showed well as a blocker. Both pass-protected and run-blocked well. No finesse here - seeks out and initiates contact, whether sniffing out the blitz or getting downfield and taking out a LBer. Grade - positive
Phil Costa C 72 6' 3.0" 300lbs 5.10 2010 - did little to stand out, either positively or negatively. The sacks that Maryland gave up were fron the outside, so you can't fault him for pass protection, but he was also part of the problem in Scott not being able to get going. Grade - neutral
Bruce Campbell OT 74 6' 7.0" 310lbs 5.05 2011 - big frame. Room to put on weight. Not much fat. Generally held up well in pass protection, though pure speed did give him some issues. Lined up at OLT. Should stay in school, but the raw ability is there to be a successful pro. Grade - slightly positive
Travis Ivey DT 90 6' 4.0" 325lbs 5.25 2010 - eventually wore down as the game went on, being more of a factor in the first half than in the second, but he showed very well in that first half. Very little fat for a 320+pounder. Pretty good definition in his arms. Showed good power and leverage, almost constantly moving his man back on passing plays, and rarely giving up ground against the run. Lined up as a DT in four man fronts and on the nose in three-man fronts. Showed a spin move as well as a rip and a swim. Got a tackle, two assists, a TFL, and a sack. Never saw him on the ground and was almost always around the play. Pursued well for his size. If he's not already, I'd say he belongs in our Top 100. Grade - very positive
Alex Wujciak MLB 33 6' 3.0" 255lbs 4.70 2011 - here's somebody who is in our Top 100. Played a good but not dominating game. Active (6 solos and 11 assists, plus half a TFL), but didn't make any big plays. Considering how much Rutgers ran and how little they passed, too many of his tackles were downfield. Moves well for his size, shows good tackling form and good instincts, but didn't stand out. Grade - neutral
Anthony Wiseman CB 6 5' 10.0" 4.40 2010 - not heavily involved, given how much the Knights elected to run the ball. Still, did break up a pass and wasn't afraid to support the run. Also returned punts. Could be a nickel or dime guy in the NFL. Grade - slightly positive
Nolan Carroll CB 14 6' 1.0" 202lbs 4.48 2010 - did not play. Out for the season with an injury.
Antwine Perez S 2 6' 1.0" 210lbs 4.50 2011 - made two tackles all day. Got caught for a really stupid penalty at one point, lighting up a receiver who wasn't even involved in the play after the whistle blew. Didn't start, and didn't show me anything to indicate that he should come out early. Grade - slightly negative
