The Blue Devils of Stout came into the homecoming-standing Pointers of WI-Stevens Point's home field with a perfect 4-0 mark Tuesday night, and lost a nail biter on a 25-yard, 4th-quarter TD pass from QB Jared Beckwith to WR Jared Jenkins. The WIAC is, year in and year out, one of the better DIII conferences in the country, and these two teams are going to both be in the hunt for the conference title. Not too many pro prospects (if any) in this game, but this is solid smash-mouth football at its finest.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Wisconsin-Stout Conference: Division III Columnist: Steve Martin
Game Notes
Greg Towner 49 6' 1.4" 235 4.90 LB 2010: Enough pro size and toughness to get a possible whiff of a pro camp. Looks like a legit 4.90 guy though, but he does make plays, especially in the backfield. Elite DIII OLB who may lack the wheels to ever do more.
Chases pretty well. Springs the last yard to making leaping tackles. Has the "want to." GRADE: Neutral
Kyle Martin 10 6' 0.6" 190 4.90 K 2010: This is my son's name, but this kid is a much better football player. Really is a solid dual-threat K-P in DIII. Averaging about 40-yards per net punt (had a 46.3 net going in this one until he was forced to pooch a 21-yard game saver type in the 4th). Made FGs of 25 and 43, missed from 31 and 49). Doesn't have an NFL leg or accuracy, but sure is a good DIII kicker. Won't see a camp. GRADE: Slightly positive
Marcus Ball 43 6' 1.0" 220 4.85 DE 2010: Solid football player who is a decent pass rusher, and appears to have enough flexibility to be looked at by some league as a possible OLB conversion. They see he is 225 now, but he is still small. Gets washed at the POA in the running game, even at this level. GRADE: Slightly negative
College: Wisconsin-Stevens Point Conference: Division III Columnist: Steve Martin
Game Notes
Charles Dercks 96 6' 3.0" 271 5.30 DE 2010: Has some size, and is definitely a talent at this level. Shakes blockers. Decent bull rusher who makes tackles and holds the point. Lacks lateral quickness. Coasts when the play is away from him. Can not turn the corner, and lacks explosion and quick-change. Doesn't appear fast. GRADE: Neutral
OTHER NOTES:
Stout: Antawan Walker (#9, 5'9", 170) is one of the faster guys in the conference. Just a junior. Good kick/punt returner but has a ways to go as a WR. So. tailback Craig Warminski is a tough middle runner (#41, 6'0", 200) who had a nice day (23-130), and can catch the screen. Jump cuts, and is fairly elusive. Looks 4.8ish.
Stevens Point: LB Pete Peterson (a 6'0", 215-pound junior who looks 5'10" to me) is a stud at this level. Did a little of everything: several tackles, a PD, a PBD, a sack, a FF...you get the idea. QB Jared Beckwith (a 6'0", 205 senior, #7) is an OK DIII QB, but his delivery is terrible. Gutsy. MN-Duluth transfer. Throws off his back foot, pushes the ball, long wind up. No shot at a camp look really, but he's tearing up the WIAC this season. WR Jared Jenkins (#1, a 6'3", 210 junior) is probably the only real PP in the game, but he's back next year. LBs Kyle Schofield (#44) and John Jones (#8) also flashed. SP may have the best LB corps in DIII football.
