This was the story of two halves. In the first, the fresh Edinboro defense kept the Vulcans hemmed in--especially big returning RB Windell Brown, back off four weeks on IR. Cal QB Josh Portis looked decent at time in the first half, but couldn't get the big play when he needed it. Edinboro was actually up 14-3 in this one, and their stud QB Trevor Harris looked like a world beater with their short (NE Patriots-style) passing attack. However, the weather came into play, and Coach Luckhardt must have given the Cal offense some kind of speech at halftime, because they came roaring out of the lockerroom in the second half and never looked back, scoring 35 unanswered to take over first place in the PSAC West from Edinboro.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Edinboro Conference: Division II Columnist: Staff

Game Notes
Trevor Harris 7 6' 2.4" 210 4.85 QB 2010: I thought I would have lots of glowing things to say about Harris while I was watching the first half, but things just got away from him in the second half. Where he was showing deadly accuracy with the short-passing game in the first half, he couldn't get much of anything done in the second and throw the ball into the ground and wide a bunch. Part of it was the weather had become a steady rain as time went on, but part of it was also an inspired defense which crowed the WRs at the LOS, and didn't give them a chance to get into their short timing routes. Still, there is a lot to like about this DII QB. Start with his pro size, and his accurate arm. He has a classic delivery, nice pocket presence, and does not take the sack. He appears to be a cool customer. Not accurate long though, and not built to play catch up. A winner with an average arm. Can run a little. Slippery in the pocket. Sidesteps, and/or steps up to avoid the rush beautifully. Feathers the ball and shows great touch in the short game. Built for the WCO and the New England Patriots-style passing attack. Makes quick reads, flows through his reads quickly and checks down nicely. He has a lousy O-line, and I'd love to see what he could do on a DI team with a line and stable of top notch WRs to throw to...GRADE: Slightly positive

Houston Brown 5 5' 9.0" 205 4.60 CB 2010: Nice little college corner who can't be more than 5'8" and looks 5'7" to me. HARD hitter for a DII CB, and plays the run very well. Stays with his man in coverage, but is abused by the bigger WRs. Tons of heart and hustle, and is a nice KRer. No home at the next level though....GRADE: Slightly positive

Game Notes
Terrence Johnson 15 5' 11.2" 195 4.60 S 2010: Playing out of position at CB, but you can get away with that in DII most of the time, and he did fine in coverage today, as well as providing decent run support. Comes up fast and delivers a real pop. Like I said, he looks like a SS playing CB, and I just don't know if he has the size and speed to be a safety at the next level. Canada may just be a perfect fit. GRADE: Slightly positve

A.J. Jackson 8 6' 6.0" 225 4.60 WR 2010: Beasty DII WR. Reminds me of a slightly more polished and steady Tommy Breaux (Towson, '09). Has that kind of size and ability. A little better route runner than Breaux, and not quite as physically imposing, but he definitely deserves a camp look. Came on really strongly today, and makes a deadly combo with the improving play of QB Josh Portis. "Action" Jackson is strong and wins in one-on-ones. He can get down low and make the shoe string. He shows average hands though, and body catches a tad too much. I doubt he is 4.60...probably closer to 4.70, but if he is 4.60 (or even better) I will not be surprised to see him drafted late. Drops some passes he shouldn't. Big target who is a diamond in the rough, for sure. GRADE: Positive

Freddie Bacco 27 5' 11.0" 220 4.60 HB 2010: Backup now that #3 Windell Brown is back in the lineup. Not really a "change up" because he and Brown have similar battering ram styles. Bacco is now the short yardage and goal line back. Scored a TD. Tough cuss. Limited prop potential. GRADE: Neutral

Derek Fiorenza 39 5' 8.0" 155 0.00 P 2010: Punted only 3 times (all in that shaky first half for Cal) for 37.0. Not a good day. Bobbled one in the rain, causing him to shank it. GRADE: Slightly negative

Dominique Curry 7 6' 4.0" 220 4.55 WR 2010: DNP. Still don't know what's up with him.. Must be injured.

Dontey Brown 52 6' 1.6" 235 4.75 LB 2010: Fairly productive guy, but strikes me as a guy who may have a long learning curve. Takes a long time to diagnose, and does nothing to protect his legs. Good street fighter who will hit you if he's in the right place. Can get into the backfield and be somewhat disruptive at this level. Gives decent effort. Not DI anymore for a reason though...my guess is lack of instincts. GRADE: Neutral

Josh Portis 12 6' 3.1" 222 4.45 QB 2010: Seems much improved from early in the year. Has developed some confidence, and is just letting the ball go. When he relaxes and throws it, he throws a nice ball. Has little touch on the ball though, or sense of when to run or throw--though he is gaining in those areas. Deadly runner, but not particularly elusive. Best pass is the square in, and short post. Not accurate at all with balls over 10-15 yards. Good footwork. He is Terelle Pryor II, wish he the two years left that Pryor has because my guess is he's just as good...Needs a ton of further development and experience at the position. Can he play safety?? His measurables SCREAM elite safety. Don't know if he has the hitter's mentaility though...GRADE: Positive

OTHER NOTES:

Cal: #53 Soph LB Brett Diamond continues to play very well, and may be a pro one day. He is fairly big, and built. Hits with authority. A DII Chris Spielmann. RB Windell Brown (#3) had a great second half and was the reason the Vulcans pulled away and put it away. Runs hard, and batters people. #6 Chedrick Cherry continues to flash some ability in spurts.

Edinboro: No one else really noteworthy. Their LOT, Tyler Hersperger, may develop but is small. If this team had an above average DII O-line, and a standout LB, they'd be national title contenders. Harris gives them that look.
