The McNeese Sate Cowboys Outguns Appalachian State 40-35

This was billed as a duel between Armanti Edwards a FCS QB with the possibility of garnering some Heisman votes and Derrick Fourroux who may also have a claim to be one of the Football Championship Subdivisions’ top dual threat signal-caller with 7384 career passing, 1738 career rushing yards and 86 total TDs including 1 via the catch. In that regard the game did not disappoint Edwards was impressive with 19 completions on 25 attempts for 235 yards along with legging out 72 yards and 2 touchdowns; meanwhile the Cowboy’s QB was stellar racking up 341 yards and 3 scores by air to one pick, while chipping in 44 rushing yards and 1 more TD. McNeese State scat-back Toddrick Penland had 127 yards as a runner and 121 yards as a receiver and 3 total TDs. The leading rusher for ASU was Devon Moore who is back from a broken ankle suffered last year against JMU, Moore had a TD and 155 yards on 23 carries.
The defensive standout in this offensive firestorm were: Ed Gainey of App State who had an INT, 3 solo tackles and 5 assists, and was the most polished in coverage of the ASU DBs, this year’s ‘Bryan Smith’ Josh Ellison is an undersized but explosive and active DE who projects to a 4-3 OLB, he finished with 2 TFLs, including a sack as well as 3 solos and 3 assists. The Mountaineer defenders: Jacque Roman, Mark LeGree and DJ Smith all flashed with 9 stops a piece.
Game Notes-
Appalachian State
Offense:
#14 QB Armanti Edwards 5’11 3/8” 184 4.51 [est] While some have compared the quick, wiry field general to Pat White, to me it seems the more apt comparison is to Bert Emanuel. While he is underrated as a passer his build and passing motion are not well-suited to pocket passing, however like White the proliferation of the ‘Wildcat’ adds to his value. Despite his long windup, average arm strength and lack of ideal size Edwards is an effective and very accurate passer, if he does not work out as a slot/WC/etc. in the NFL he could be a CFL QB. Late 6th round to UDFA.

WR #6 RS Jr. CoCo Hillary is a former QB at 5’9 ¾ 191 he is a strong runner, an improving route runner though he is far from a finished product as a WR, he totaled 60 yards on 4 receptions and had 3 KORs for 52 yards. Hillary’s return skills are likely get him into a camp, PUDFA.

TB #20 Devon Moore RS Jr. 5’8 5/8” 204 4.59 [est.] I am not the 1st and I won’t be the last to compare Moore to DeAngelo Williams, though he lacks William’s breakaway speed, the power, balance and cutting ability are similar, with a big year in 2010-11 he could be a late round selection.

WR #17 Matt Cline 5’10 191 4.61 [est.] Cline is a sure handed WR, a solid route runner but not special in any 1 area. 5 catches, 74 yards and he showed solid RAC skills on a 29 yarder, still likely an UDFA.
Defense
#40 LB Jacque Roman5’11 1/8” 239 4.82 [est.] seems to have been at the school for well over a decade, this is not the case . Roman had 2 solos, 7 helpers and was always around the ball. His size/speed ratio means his best in the NFL is on special teams , UDFA.
FS #13 Mark LeGree 5’11 ¾” 201 4.54 [est.] May have to best pro potential of any ASU defender. He had 4 solos and 5 assists, he has good instincts, size and speed, he has a good chance to be a late-round selection after next year.

Future Find- CB #28 Ed Gainey 5’10 5/8” 188 who posted these numbers at his HS combine:40-Yard Dash: 4.34, Short Shuttle: 4.53 Vertical Jump: 37.7" 3-Cone: 7.47 Broad Jump: 9’8” is the kind of athlete that would not have found his way to Boon in years past. This very talented sophomore could be the Greg Tolar or DR-C pf a future draft, he is fluid, fast and aggressive.
McNeese State
Offense- #4 QB Derrick Fourroux 6’0 7/8” 202 4.77 [est.] Is one of FCS football’s undiscovered gems, he is accurate, he has a good arm, mobility and courage, he is raw in terms of NFL reads and footwork but he should be an PUDFA, at worst he should find work up north.

#22 Toddrick Pendland 5 ' 8 ¾ “ 178 4.44 [est.] Is not as straight ahead fast as Demps, Rainey or Devine, nor as powerful as Arkansas’ Mike Smith, however he can be used in much the same way, he is very quick, is improving as a route runner and receiver and should be a late round selection.
Defense
#91 Josh Ellison 6’2 ½ “ 231 4.62 [est.] Think Will Witherspoon, is strong for his size, has a few good moves and with a great pro day could become a late rounder at the least he’s a PUDFA.
