...was a song made popular near where this game was played when the rag-tag American Colonial Army accepted the surrender of the British troops to end the American Revolutionary War. James Madison is supposed to beat The College of William & Mary, and had done so four straight times at W&Ms home field, but this is W&M's season, and they showed it by stoning the JMU rushing attack with one of the best defensive lines in FCS football, and by unleashing a tandem of tough runners of their own in RS junior Courtland Marriner (#25, 5'9", 182) and Sophomore Jonathan Grimes (#34, 5'10", 201). JMU has a fine defensive line too, but they eventually wore down in the second half, as The Tribe rolled to their 4th conference win against just one loss. JMU desperately misses QB Rodney Landers, and when their starter went down a couple of weeks ago, that loss became even more painful. It is destroying their season. JMU lacks any kind of offensive rhythm and their psyche is now shattered after four straight losses.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: James Madison Conference: Colonial Athletic Columnist: Steve Martin

Game Notes
J.D. Skolnitsky 98 6' 5.2" 263 4.74 DT 2010: DNP.

Arthur Moats 52 6' 1.7" 249 4.75 DE 2010: Ripped. Dedicated to his craft. Nice slap and go move. Gets upfield. Times his jump off the snap. Very productive. Has some flexibility, and may be able to convert. Has become better against the run. Kind of a DE/OLB tweener with no certainty that he can play off the LOS. Short, and lacks the incredible explosion that some short NFL DEs of recent memory have exhibited. Still average at the POA in the run game. Undoubted leader of the defense, and one of the better players at the position that JMU has ever fielded. 7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL. GRADE: Positive

Sam Daniels 58 6' 0.4" 272 4.95 DT 2010: Solid penetrator who is a high energy guy and a tough cuss. Short and can be neutralized when he doesn't use a second move. Keeps fighting all game long, but doesn't always free up the LBs. Nice college player with limited pro potential. GRADE: Neutral

Mike Caussin 85 6' 4.3" 228 4.80 TE 2010: Developing dual-use TE who had 5 catches and is now holding his own at the LOS. Still needs to get bigger, but he has come along way and has some definite upside. I don't think he makes a camp, but that is because he is relatively un-noticed, rather than undeserving. Reliable hands, and improving as a blocker. Like the height. Looks like 4.80 may be a tad generous though, and if it is, that hurts his chances...GRADE: Slightyl positive

Bosco Williams 5 6' 1.6" 220 4.60 WR 2010: He's had games where he has been able to flash much more than today. Runs good routes, but he has no QB at present to take advantage of his skill set. Unless he caught a pass during the middle of the game when there was some severe electrical disturbance in the telecast, he didn't even get thrown to today. GRADE; INC.

Scotty McGee 19 5' 8.6" 190 4.45 CB 2010: Deadly in the return game, whether returning punts or kicks. If there are more than 3 better return specialists for the NFL draft, I'd have to see proof. Improving as a cover corner, but will never be a force in the run. Looks like a dime back, but shouldn't have to make a living on defense. Playing bump & run... but needs a better "bump." Gives a cushion but can take it back quickly. 6 tkls, a PD. PRs of 25 and 18. KR of 30. GRADE: Neutral

Dorian Brooks 53 6' 2.6" 285 5.20 OG 2010: Figher but not a consistene winner. Maintains blocks pretty well when he is able to lock, which isn't all that often. Short....probably shorter than listed here. Pulls but not a consistent striker when pulling. Technically sound in most phases. Can be turned in pass pro especially if he is on an island. OK running the stretch. Relies to much on hand work rather than foot work. Stones smaller pass rushers he should stone. Average athlete with average size and little upside. Camp body at best. GRADE: Neutral

Game Notes
Adrian Tracy 97 6' 3.2" 243 4.80 DE 2010; For my money he is the best DE prospect in the conference, and one of the best this side of Northern Iowa. Nice size and wingspan. Similar to last years' CAA DE phenom Lawrence Sidbury of Richmond, but is flying further under the radar. Gets my nod as the CAA's top DE prospect narrowly over JMU's Adrian Tracy because of his size and improved play against the run. Makes tackles from the back side. Shows enough quickness and lateral agility to be looked at as a LB, while he has room to get bigger if left as a 4-3 pass rushing end. Comes hard off the edge, and fights down the LOS and ruins the stretch play. Scrapes well. Protects his legs, and plays with energy. Solid citizen. Over runs plays at times, and overpursues. May lack the bulk and speed to beat elite NFL OT's if left as an edge rusher. Needs better technique and is still not an elite run defender. Good, not great overall skill set. Slight LOC issues. Can be crushed by bigger run blockers if he gets turned. Still emerging, and may have a ways to go developmentally. 8 tackls, 2 sacks, 1 missed tackle. GRADE: Positive

R.J. Archer 16 6' 1.6" 220 4.75 QB 2010: OK size. Very good escape ability and running ability for a QB. Former WR who understands routes, progression, footwork, etc. Technically sound as a passer and stands tall in the pocket and delivers a nice catchable ball. Smart on the field, and has reverted to the position easily the past season and a half. Versatility is a huge plus. May stick if he can find his way onto a practice squad and continue to develop his overall skill package. A bit of "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none" type. Lacks a cannon. Marginal pro size and strength. Has only done it as a QB for a year, and doesn't have big-league speed for WR. LOC issues and lack of experience will dog him. GRADE: Slightly positive

D.J. McAulay 4 5' 10.7" 185 4.60 WR 2010: Showed quickness and separation quickness. Caught 3 balls before being forced to the sidelines with an arm injury. Saw him in a sling on the sidelines in the second half. GRADE: INC.

Rob Varno 98 6' 4.5" 228 4.85 TE 2010: Similar, physically to JMU's Caussin, but is not quite as polished in either facet of the game. Has some ability, and has a frame that makes you wonder what he'd look/play like at 245. Seal blocks nicely to create a wide off-tackle-area lane. Shows a nice base and some technique when blocking. Blocks THEN releases. Need to see more reps of him with the ball coming his way..Had 5 catches including a 9-yard TD grab, but also lost a fumble when he tried to run over a guy before completely securing the ball. GRADE: Neutral

David Caldwell 6 5'10.5" 212 4.65 SS 2010: Tough run-support safety who made some plays against the run. Seems to drop smoothly into coverage, but got no read on his coverage ability in this one. GRADE: Neutral

Sean Lissemore 93 6' 3.5" 286 4.95 DT 2010: Lunchpail guy who does more than you'd think he should. Could be the type to sneak into a camp and make a real pain of himself come cutdown day. Reminds me of a young Mark Spindler (Pitt, '90) but not as flashy. Thick, raw-boned street brawler who is naturally strong and a bit nasty. Does not look all that athletic but can move. Plays better than his athletic numbers and has some room to grow. Penetrates unless double-teamed, and is a good bull rusher. Not all that big for an interior D-line candidate. Can be cut blocked. Has a little upside but will probably never be more than a journeyman. Doesn't bat balls. Lacks consistent use of a variety of moves. I had him in on 11 tackles with half a sack. GRADE: Positive

C.J. Herbert 95 6' 2.7" 237 4.95 DT 2010: Plays DE and plays it very well at this level. I have to wonder how much of it might be due to the guy patrolling the other side of the line, but this guy kept on showing up all afternoon. Small, and will have to transition, but he really could surprise. Fights through trash like the LN he probably is. Gets around lumbering linemen to the backfield and makes plays. Makes a genuine nuisance of himself in the run game AND can rush the passer. Would be a star on any other CAA squad. First real introduction to C.J., and I want to see him again now. GRADE: Positive

C.J. Muse 56 6' 3.3" 313 5.25 C 2010: Eh, just a big body really. Can play C or OG. A bit dumpy. Lacks agility and COD. Small steps. Gets to the second level but doesn't do all that much when he gets there. GRADE: Slightly negative

Brian Pate 80 5' 9.0" 182 5.00 K 2010: Kicks it into or near the endzone and has one of the better legs in the CAA. Kicked a 30-something FG and looked OK throughout. GRADE: Neutral

OTHER NOTES:

W&M:
RS Freshman CB B.W. Webb (#2, 5'11", 160) looks a future draft pick. Can cover, and can make the big play. Can pick it.

JMU:
Three defenders stood out: RS Soph SS Vidal Nelson (#6, 5'11", 205), RS Frosh FS Jakarie Jackson (#15, 5'11", 175), and RS Soph DE D.J. Bryant (#91, 6'3", 240).
