The Memphis Tigers showed signs off life in spurts throughout this contest, but they simply could not mount enough of an offense against the stout ECU D-line (which has two draftable prospects right now, and three if Linval Joseph declares.) The Pirates Sr. RB, Dominique Lindsay was solid throughout, rushing somewhere around 28-139-1, and the much-maligned 6th-year QB Patrick Pinckney was quietly efficient (though still no PP) in the win.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: East Carolina Conference: Conference USA Columnist: Erik Sandelin

Game Notes
Dominique Lindsay 24 5' 10.0" 203 4.60 HB 2010: Nothing flashy, but just keeps piling up the yards, and keeps the chains moving. 4.60 is about right, and certainly plays no faster than that. Sidesteps and picks his holes pretty well. Doesn't block much or catch the football. Camp body, probably, but he's had some very nice games this year--this one and UTEP in particular where he's looked like a legit PP. GRADE: Slightly positive

Jamar Bryant 10 6' 2.0" 208 4.58 WR 2010: Jamar seems to be a forgotten man in this offense now with the mergence of stud Jr. WR Dwayne Harris. Used mostly as a decoy and a downfield blocker. Did a nice job at least twice that I noticed making room on the second level for either Lindsay or Ruffin to rumble for big gainers. Pretty strong and fights forward after the catch. Not explosive, and 4.58 seems about right. GRADE: Neutral

Linval Joseph 97 6' 6.0" 322 5.00 DT 2011: The more I watch this kid the more I see a young Richard Seymour. Not quite that ability level yet, but he oozes potential. Great pile maker and pushes the pile. Gives pretty good effort most of the time. Mostly a bull rusher at this stage of his development, and needs to use the moves more, though he does display a couple occasionally. You can't teach 6'6", 322, and he uses all of it pretty well. Doesn't adjust to the RB going through near him, and needs to be more aware. Has a world of talent, but has a long ways to go yet in terms of technique. Of he maxes out, I see a potential NFL 3-4 starter here. Inconsistent, and doesn't dominate yet the way his tools say he should. Is also helped by having great line mates to work with. GRADE: Slightly positive

CJ Wilson 95 6' 4.0" 271 4.80 DE 2010: 4th round 3-4 DE who rushes the QB far better than his looks would make you believe. Lumbers some for a DE, and looks like a DT coming off the bus. Gets upfield quickly, but can stay wired to blockers. Is stout at the POA and could hold his own in either a 3-4 or a 4-3. May lack explosion to be a rush end, and lacks physically-dominating run-stuffing characteristics to be a FT strongside DE. Not sure what his home will be. Probably a rotational guy who can be viewed either as a versatile asset, or a "not quite" guy at any position. GRADE: Neutral

Doug Palmer 70 6' 3.0" 300 5.23 OG 2010: DNP

Sean Allen 54 6' 3.0" 307 5.27 C 2010: Played only the first half, and I didn't see an injury. While he was in he looked OK, but nothing special...Gets in the way in the running game. Not a killer. Will push hard in short yardage. Makes a wall in pass pro. Gets to the 2nd level, and sometimes connects. GRADE: INC.

Jay Ross 90 6' 3.0" 306 5.09 DT 2010: Possible late round draft pick. Quick off the snap and into the opponent. Gives you your money's worth. Has enough size and athleticism to be a rotational 4-3 DT. I don't see NT potential here. Won't wow you, but worth bringing in for sure. Gets pretty good pad level. Holds his spot pretty well in the run game, and will surprise you with penetration to the QB on occasion. GRADE: Neutral to slightly positive

Van Eskridge 4 6' 0.0" 200 4.63 S 2010: Shows up on film. A leader on the field who makes plays. Wish he were bigger, but he plays pretty big. Impressive, attacking, run support safety who is also involved in coverage. A step late getting to the spot in pass coverage. Tackles after the catch instead of breaking up the pass. Dropped an easy pick late. Need to see him manned up a few more times to really grade his future potential, but he plays with reckless abandon at the college level, and gives you what you want at this level. GRADE: Positive

Matt Dodge 42 6' 2.0" 220 5.00 P 2010: Big foot. Nice placement (21 downed inside 20 so far...) Averaging 44 yards per punt. Bombed a 73-yarder (net 53) in this one. Downed another at the 8. Very impressive game. Looks like a camp guy for sure, at worst. GRADE: Positive

Nick Johnson 44 6' 0.5" 217 4.70 LB 2010: flew around, but didn't make as many plays as I've seen him make in the past. Did have a spurt in the second half where he wrapped a FR around a couple of tackles. Plays a solid collegiate MLB. GRADE: Slightly negative

Game Notes
Duke Calhoun 22 6' 4.0" 200 4.46 WR 2010: One of Memphis's huge WR targets. ST warrior, who works hard, and is very versatile. Solid running the ball on sweeps and reverses. Shows OK hands. Willing blocker. Does a lot of things pretty well. Maybe a tad thin to break the jam, and may not do anything well enough for the next level, but he IS all that in the C-USA. GRADE: Slightly positive

Carlos Singleton 89 6' 8.0" 220 4.72 WR 2010: Another of those power forward WRs who never seem to pan out at the next level. Did have a jump ball TD (just as you would expect) and shows pretty decent hands. But, of course, he is not a quick twitch guy, and will probably follow Drouzon Quillen and Tommy Breaux into obscurity. That having been said, one of these guys is going to eventually break through. This one shows fearlessness across the middle and is a deadly college receiver on fades and jump balls. 4.72 is probably about right, but if, by chance, he's faster than that, who knows...(Breaux was reportedly mid 4.5s though....) GRADE: Neutral

Curtis Steele 26 6' 0.0" 185 4.49 HB 2010: Average mid-major back who is a bit game-to-game streaky. One cut runner who doesn't look 4.49...at least he doesn't always play 4.49. Feet sometimes stop on contact. Thin. Can rumble when he breaks free and rip of some nice gains, but he was largely hemmed in and kept in check in this one. Not on my board. GRADE: Slightly negative

Will Hudgens 7 6' 3.0" 225 4.90 QB 2010: 6th year college QB who looks the part. Has struggled through and overcome a TON of injury history (torn ACL in '04, Broken leg in '05, which he broke again in '06, torn ACL again in '08. '07 was OK but he did have his meniscus scoped after that season.) You've got to wonder what you might have had here had he had an injury-free career. Plays like a 6th-year signal caller. Smart and makes good reads. Shows a little zip on the 20-yarder. Short passer and game manager. Can make the big throw, and seems to have pretty decent accuracy. Intriguing guy. OK in the pocket and OK delivery. GRADE: Neutral

DajLeon Farr 11 6' 5.2" 262 4.86 TE 2010: So this is where this guy wound up. We've been hunting him down for awhile. Miami transfer who was rumored to have transferred to Oregon. Huge target. Dumb football player. Used in line some and does OK, but gives only average effort. Has what looks like some NFL talent, but can anyone get it out?? Can line up in the slot and can catch. 4.86 seems about right. BIG target. GRADE: Slightly negative

OTHER NOTES:

Memphis: DEs Greg Terrell (#94) and Josh Weaver (#90) are both seniors but don't do anything all that impressive. Senior SS Alton Starr (#7) made some plays and shows up at the bottom of the pile quite a bit. CB Deante Lamar is a senior CB who is a real nice tackling CB with a good physique. Shadows the WR down the line and then jumps the RB in running plays. I'd keep an eye on this kid, Erik. RS Junior safety Marcus Ball can PLAY. KR (and Stanford transfer) Chris Hobbs (another junior) really flashed while returning today. Could be drafted on that alone next year. Junior LB Winston Bowens (#50) doesn't look the part, but sometimes plays it. RS Freshman DT Dontari Poe is 6'3", 350+ and plays the whole game. That is a name you will all want to start repeating to yourselves...

E.C.U.: WR Darryl Freeney had a career day (5-116-1). Junior WR Dwayne Harris drew the most attention and didn't get all that much accomplished in this one. He is definitely going to be draftable if he stays healthy. Concentrates on the ball. Looks like a TE, but moves like a big WR. Runs like a RB. Has a lot of upside and talent. QB Pinckney was OK, and may get a look north of the border, but he looks like a DII QB, and has that kind of arm. Backup RB Giavanni Ruffin made some nice contributions.
