The University of Indianapolis Greyhounds came to Ashland's Senior Day at Eagle Jack Miller Stadium on a 3-game winning streak hoping to get to .500 with a win over Ashland who lost 4 of their last 5 and are coming off a thumping at the hands of national powerhouse Grand Valley State. While the Greyhounds were able to corral the AU offensive attack (total Eagle O was just 188 yards), they could not contain Eagle sophomore DB Carlin Isles who returned the opening KO 91 yards for the day's lone TD. Nor could they stop senior WR Nick Bellanco, who blocked his 2nd punt of the year and set-up the 2nd of 4 Eagle FGs by sophomore Greg Berkshire.

The Eagle offense never got in sync - with a constant 15 mph wind and gusts up to 30, passing was difficult, and the stingy Indy defense (coming in 2nd in total defense in the GLIAC behind GVSU) while not able to sack Cundiff, was able to prevent an Eagle offensive TD; for the game, Eagle punter senior Derek Reidel's punt yardage total of 181 was almost equal to the offensive output for the day. In a post-game interview, AU head coach Lee Owens explained his philosophy for the day:

"We got that early lead and from my perspective, we didn't have to drive the length of the field to score. We didn't want to get Bill (Cundiff) hit in the scoring zone. But we didn't want to give up red zone opportunities, we took advantage of our red zone opportunities. We thought that if we took advantage of our red zone opportunities we'd win this football game. We didn't want to give Indianapolis any opportunities at all."

Billy Cundiff 17 6' 1.6 219 4.58 QB 2010

Given the AU game concept for the day, Cundiff was used more in a hand-off role. He completed 8 of 18 (with several passes dropped) for 61 yards with the longest completion for 13 yards (which was a short screen and run). No downfield shots were really taken all day (or dropbacks, except for a couple screens) - even with 7 seconds to play in the first half, with the ball at midfield and the wind at their back, AU 'took a knee' and let the clock run out. Cundiff also ran 3 times for 18 yards. Nothing really here to evaluate today.

GRADE: NEUTRAL

Joe Horn 7 5' 11.9 186 4.40 WR 2011

As Cundiff was grounded, so was Horn and the entire Eagle receiver corps. Horn had 2 catches for 16 yards (to lead the AU receivers) and 1 carry for 8 yards (this write-up is almost word-for-word as the GV game - not much happening in the air at Ashland in the past couple weeks). However, the Eagles introduced a new wrinkle, with Horn catching a bubble screen (actually lateral) and then throwing 35 yards to the endzone (and strong wind) to WR Christian Livingston - Livingston made a spectacular catch, but was ruled out of bounds. On the pass, Horn got blasted by UI LB Mike Dum and got a small taste of what Cundiff has experienced 35 times this season. Horn continues to make contributions as safety on the KO cover team (and filled-in once for Isles on the punt cover team) and OLB on the punt block team that has 6 blocks on the season.

Tim Dury 17 6' 2.2 277 5.30 C 2010

Dury provides the leadership for the Indy offensive line (and indeed the team as a co-captain.) He has started at right guard as a sophomore, but has started 21 games at center for the 'Hounds since then. Dury was showing a slight limp, obviously playing hurt with a brace on his left knee and significant tape on his left ankle. His snaps were all good, and once engaged, he kept good contact with the defender - good size and upper-body strength. Still tough to make a fair evaluation on his mobility with his injury. Definitely have to give him credit for his level of play despite not being at full-strength.

GRADE: INCOMPLETE

GAME NOTES: AU kick-returner/DB soph Carlin Isles has KO returns of 100, 91, and 85 yards in less than 2 seasons ... UI punt returner/WR soph Ryan Forney had a 49 yard part return, his 3rd 40+ return of the year - he is 9th in D-2 in punt return average (15.6) ... Eagle soph S Brian Gamble led all defenders with 15 tackles (12 solo) with 2 TFLs including 1 sack and a forced fumble on UI's first offensive play to set up the first Eagle FG (would keep an eye on Gamble for the future) ... AU soph kicker Greg Berkshire was perfect on the day hitting his PAT and FGs of 27, 19, 33, and 27 yards for 13 of AU's 19 points.

The Eagles (5-5, 5-4) travel to in-state rival Findlay (7-3, 6-3) for the final game of the season. The Greyhounds (4-6, 3-6) make the long trip to Marquette to face Northern Michigan (5-4, 5-4).

I finally got a chance to see the Ashland-GVSU game. Very impressive facility! When did that get completed? That should help with the recruiting huh?
