Florida LB (and potential top 5 pick) Brandon Spikes was caught on tape trying to intentionally gouge the eyes of a prostrate Georgia player this past weekend. It was played over and over on CNN, and this could just be the beginning of a public outcry. So far, he has received only a half game suspension for this. While this is the type of stuff that was commonplace (even condoned) during an earlier era, what do you all think the repercussions might be today to an athlete caught trying to INTENTIONALLY injure another in such a manner?

Does this affect his draft status?

My feeling is it should be at least similar to the 5 game suspension that DT Albert Haynesworth received for stomping on Dallas C Andre Gurode's head. I believe that is sort of a precedent on an infraction of this nature. If left unpunished, or the punishment is a slap on the wrist type of thing, there is no real consequence and the action may be repeated later with more dangerous results. Of course, a real punishment does not guarantee the act won't be repeated, but it still sends the right message.

He asked Urban Meyer to suspend him for the entire game and did sit out against Vanderbilt.

I don't think this will hurt his draft status. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the only negative behavior issue? Not saying that I condone this, but I think it was just a one time thing. I actually heard that it could improve his status cause it shows that he is nasty and that was some teams concerns.

I am not aware of anything else that specifically pertains to Spikes. However, his brother is doing a life term in North Carolina for murder whom he hopes to help appeal the conviction once he gets a big contract, and there are conflicting reports online as to Spikes' character, and in more than one web site he is referred to as a thug. I do not know the details of his brother's conviction, so I won't comment on that. Spikes has had a rough life, for sure, but that's no excuse for his actions, and his one game suspension against Vandy was just what I said, a slap on the wrist.
