Colgate, a perennial powerhouse in the Patriot League, narrowly escaped Lehigh, PA with a narrow win over the Mountain Hawks. The reason? A slightly stiffer defense, including a legitimate PP in Safety Uzi Idah, AND a stronger O-line that includes a senior left side that blew holes all day for RB Jordan McCord (30-153-0). Fordham's highly-touted QB, John Skelton, may not even be the best in his own league. That title may eventually belong to H.C.'s Dominic Randolph, or up-and-coming Lehigh junior signal caller J.B. Clark, who was quite impressive in defeat.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Lehigh Conference: Patriot League Columnist: Steve Martin

Game Notes
Matt Cohen 22 6' 1.0" 235 4.80 LB 2010: Has some size and ability. Not real instinctive and doesn't read and react as well as some. Built better than he plays. Makes the tackles he should make, and is a force at this level. Sheds OK. Fairly productive, but doesn't show me the explosive dominance in any are of LB play you would need to be considered a legit pro prospect. GRADE: Neutral

Jarard Cribbs 23 5' 9.2" 175 4.60 CB 2011: The better of the Mountain Hawk bookend CBs. Nice punt returner. Breaks down well when tackling. Has some room to grow, and definitely needs 15 pounds of raw muscle. Covers adequately at this level and has some quick-twitch about him. Defended one and broke up another. GRADE: Positive

John Kennedy 13 5' 9.6" 185 4.55 CB 2010: Beaten like a drum by the Raiders legit prospect, 6'5"+ WR Pat Simonds. Of course, Simonds can beat almost anybody at this level. Kennedy gives too much cushion, and then lacks the wheels to get back into the play. Very average college CB with no NFL future. With some technique work, he might try out elsewhere though, but he has a long way to go. Jams pretty well at the line, but doesn't turn in time. GRADE: Negative

Game Notes
Carlton Walker 78 5' 11.7" 253 5.05 DT 2010: Does a nice job filling a lane at this level, but is small and plays smallish in that he doesn't really move anybody on a consistent basis. Does his job, and precious little more. Makes tackles right at him, but shows little ability to shed and tackle to his right or left. Slides down the line OK, but is fairly easy to block, especially head up. Plugger and hand fighter with no chance of a camp invitation. GRADE: Slightly negative

Pat Simonds 80 6' 5.2" 227 4.70 WR 2010: Reminds me of former UCA WR Aaron Fairooz who we thought had a shot too, but never really got one. Big, strong, possession type with good hands, ability to return kicks (at this level at least) and adequate speed to star in the Patriot League. Has all the typical big receiver faults and weaknesses though. Doesn't show real quick-twitch movements into and out of cuts. May present a big target for the jame at the LOS, and despite his strength, may not be strong enough to get back on his routes against NFL DBs. May actually be sub-4.70, and is a leader with hands. Should get a look, but probably won't. GRADE: Positive

Uzi Idah 23 5' 10.7" 198 4.65 S 2010 Tough little do-it-all safety who is one of the better sub-FBS safety prospects around. Packs a wallop and shows he understands how to read an offense. Makes a big play. Best player on the defense for one of the FCS's better teams. Has enough COD and instincts to be effective in pass defense as well. 4.65 may be about right, but if he surprises and goes faster in post-season workouts we might have a camp guy here. Just big enough, tough enough and smart enough to deserve a look-see. GRADE: Positive

Greg Hadley 45 5' 11.0" 223 4.75 LB 2010: Another of those small school LBs who has a lot of ability for their measurables, but who just lacks the size to really project well to the next level. Gets around blockers, rushes the passer, chases well in the run game, flows well to the ball. Gets low and submarines the pile to get the ball carrier. Wasn't really tested in coverage, but looks pretty smooth in his drops. All around fine football player who, if he were 6'2", 243 would be definitely a draft pick. Does make me think he'd have troubel fighting the trash at the next level and keeping himself free of OGs targeting him on the second level. GRADE: Positive

Wayne Moten 9 5' 7.7" 177 4.50 CB 2010: DNP

Ryan Gross 51 6' 2.5" 268 5.25 C 2010: Playing LOT now, and that shows his versatility. Not big, but plays big at this level. Really understands all phases of line play. Agile, quick and cuts FAST and well. Hits what he aims at. Effort guy who will take you down in the run game if you turn ever so slightly away from vertical to the LOS. Again, wish he were bigger. Grades very well at this level, and the versatility is a plus. If he can add 20 pound of muscle without losing any flexibility, he could be a factor in a camp --back inside though...GRADE: Positive

Zach Posey 67 6' 1.5" 285 5.45 OG 2010: Nice college OG who plays hard and gives decent effort on every snap. Not athletically gifted, but uses what he has. Fairly aggressive in the run game. In pass pro, he gets walked by bigger people though. Pulls, locks and drives in the R.G. Doesn't attack enough on the second level. Marginal prospect who tries. GRADE: Neutral

Adrien Schriefer 95 6' 2.0" 232 4.75 TE 2011: Nice Patriot League TE who caught his first passes of the year in this one. Gets out into pass patterns OK, and gives effort blocking. Way too small to do anything than get a nod of appreciation on his college achievements. GRADE: Neutral

OTHER NOTES:

Colgate: Junior QB Greg Sullivan (#11, 6'1", 204) Doesn't look the part, but, for the most part, he plays it. Spins it OK, especially short. Curl hops and loads up to throw long and thus I believe he has a below average arm. Movements aren't smooth. Junior CB Coree Moses (#12, 6'0", 171) is a database guy next year for sure and may be the best prospect right now on this defense, outside of Idah. RB Jordan McCord had a nice day, but, as is typcial with Colgate backs, it's the system and the O-line that should get most of the credit...that was even true when Jordan Scott was setting all those records as a 4.80 college back.

Lehigh: QB J.B. Clark is a kid we may be raving about next year. (He's 6'3" legit, and 215). He stands tall and delivers. Has solid form and passing tech. Has some zip on his ball. Really has a nice release. Runs too much and takes too much on his shoulders (due to lack of support) and struggles to reset his feet after avoiding the rush, but the kid has some skills.
