During the first quarter, V.M.I. thoroughly dominated the Flames statistically, out gaining them more than 2-1, yet they trailed on the scoreboard 24-7 when the first 15:00 ended. Don't think I've ever seen that one before. V.M.I. has a dominant offense but no concept of ball security. They turned the ball over seven times in this one and must be near the top of the list nationally in terms of team turnovers. They also have a dynamic RB-WR in Tim Maypray, who may be the best PP in this particular contest. Liberty was extremely opportunistic as they battle for a shot to take their 4th Big South Championship in a row, though Stony Brook may have something to say about that....

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Virginia Military Conference: Big South Columnist: Bill Carroll

Game Notes
Howard Abegesah 31 5' 11.2" 221 4.60 HB 2010: Has some jets. Runs hard. Will block, but needs to do a better job there. Has been productive in a mid-level FCS conference, but is not terribly explosive. No idea about the hands. Looks like a poor man's James Davis (Clemson, '09). Grinder who gives pretty good effort and runs with some authority. GRADE: Neutral

Levi Swindell 19 5' 10.2" 187 4.54 CB 2010: DNP...Don't know the story....

Tim Maypray 28 5' 8.0" 165 4.50 HB 2010: Explosive little guy who really is dangerous on every touch, and they make sure he touches it as often as possible. Returns every kick and punt, primary RB, wildcat QB (with ball security issues though) and can even line up wide and catch a few balls. Explosive and pretty fast. Has some openfield moves. No blocker, but tries. Jitterbug who is a deadly sweep/end runner. Nice kick returner. Tiny, but deserves a look. Poor man's Kevin Faulk without the outstanding hands. Probably more like 5'6.5".... GRADE: Positive

College: Liberty Conference: Big South Columnist: Bill Carroll

Game Notes
Ian Childress 32 6' 4.0" 225 4.80 LB 2010: Rangy. Aware in coverage and drops nicely into coverage. Has some growth potential. Has some read & react skills. Runs OK. Has a lot to learn and will need to bulk up and get teched up through some serious pro LB coaching, but has enough tools to warrant a camp look. Is at least a couple of years away from being able to contribute anywhere though... GRADE: Slightly positive

Tommy Beecher 7 6' 2.0" 227 4.90 QB 2010: South Carolina transfer who is very average in every aspect of QB play. Will chuck it into coverage. Best play is the deep ball, but he won't get away with it the way he does at this level on the next. Average arm, average instincts. Throws best with people in his face. Tough leader who lacks a pro resume, mentality, or arm. Could grow up and surprise. Has some intangibles and is a winner. GRADE: Neutral

Trey Jacobs 92 6' 3.0" 280 4.95 DE 2010: Looks like a potential 3-4 DE candidate at times, and like a stiff at others. Hot and cold effort and production. Holds the POA very well at this level, and may be able to do so in spurts/rotation at the next. Worth a look because of his size, physique and good plays. best PP in the current Liberty senior class. GRADE: Neutral

Tim Torrence 27 5' 8.0" 165 4.58 CB 2010: Supports the run OK for a small corner. Typical FCS under-sized, try-hard college corner. Nothing to write home about here. Does a fine job in the Big South Conference, but his glory days are behind him, unfortunately. GRADE: Neutral

OTHER NOTES:

V.M.I.: WR Zach Collins (#24, 5'10", 200) is a senior who started and made a couple plays. Sr. DE Patrick McKinney (#17, 6'3", 245) tries but gets little done.

Liberty: Soph. RB Aldreakis Allen is showing up on film and looking pretty decent (#37). Same can be said of mountainous Soph. DT Asa Chapman (#98, 6'5", 377).
