Stony Brook overcame a 10-point third quarter deficit to tie the game, but Charleston Southern got a 43-yard field goal in the first overtime to take a 30-27 Big South football win this afternoon in Charleston. The loss dropped Stony Brook to 5-5 overall and gave the Seawolves their first conference loss of the season. SBU, 4-1 in the Big South, will have a chance to gain a share of the conference championship next Saturday at home against Liberty. Paglia also kicked field goals of 46 and 51 yards to help Charleston Southern (4-6, 2-3) overcome Stony Brook's 340 yards rushing.
The Buccaneers led 27-24 until Stony Brook's Wesley Skiffington kicked an 18-yard field goal with 12:46 left in the game. Deon Lee scored on an 89-yard kickoff return for Charleston Southern.
A.J. Toscano was 19-for-32 for 214 yards and a 29-yard touchdown pass to Josh Atkinson for the Buccaneers.
Edwin Gowins rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and Conte Cuttino added 163 yards and a score for Stony Brook.
Stony Brook
Offense-
#1 TB Conte Cuttino 5'9 3/8 200 4.54 [est] With 648 carries 3,355 yards, 5.2 ypa and 17 rushing TDs, his production is, his measurables are decent, on film he runs bigger than he measures and faster than he times. He is not much of a blocker or receiver, though he seems to show potential in those areas. On the day he had 21 carries for 163 yards, including 43 yard run that showcased balance and vision, and 1 TD. Not quite with Bell or Ford among smaller school guys but deserving of a good long look. PUDFA with the chance to be a Sammy Winder type.
Future Flash- Sophomore TB Edwin Gowins 5'10 1/2 224, 4.61 [est] is powerful and quick, a good enough athlete to draw interest from Miami as an LB. He had 177 yards and made about 80% of them after initial contact. Gowins earned last season's Big South Freshman of the Year award as well as being named the national Freshman of the Year by the College Sporting News after setting a school record with 1,310 yards, a mark that led all FCS freshmen in 2008; a "poor man's" Marion Barber, he has a very good chance to be a late round pick in 2 years.
Defense-
# MLB Tyler Santucci 6'0" 235 4.77 [est.] is tough guy, tackling machine, team captain and though a few FBS schools sniffed around him, the Pitt Panthers only offered Santucci a preferred walk-on spot, no others even did that. He plays downhill to the ball and he attacks the line of scrimmage aggressively. He shows that he can disrupt plays in the backfield with the ability to fight through debris. He's the type who even might have a Hank Bauer/Larry Izzo type of career as a core special teams player. He had 2 solo tackles, 5 assists and 1INT.
Charleston Southern
Offense
#16 QB A.J. Toscano 6'0 3/4" 211 4.82 [est.] Fairly mobile, gutsy, average arm, better in the middle than towards the boundaries, was 19 off 32, with 1TD, 214 yards and 1 pick, he looked like a future CFL 2nd teamer, UDFA.
#3 WR Gerald Stevenson 5'9 5/8" 168 4.48 [est.] Likely the fastest athlete in the game, had 8 snags for 76 yards, his long was only 17, he could still PUDFA with an outside shot at the 7th with a fast 40.
#14 RS Jr. WR Kwame Krakue 5'9 1/8" 174 4.52 Very quick, runs clean routes and has above average hands, but small and good, but not great speed. Has value as a returner, that could be his ticket, had 3 catches for 62 yards including a shifty 37 yard catch and run.
TE Tyrese Harris 6' 1 3/8 251 4.81 [est.] started as a defensive end but made the switch to the other side of the ball two years ago. Last season, his first as a full-time tight end, he caught 14 passes for 136 yards and four touchdowns. He's a very good blocker who brings attitude and hip snap, he has surprisingly good hands, his route running does need refinement. He is worth a look as a H-Back/Fullback. Unfortunately he was a DNP, with an injury sustained against Savannah State.
Defense
#2 WLB Andrew McKain 6'0 1/4" 224 4.71 A transfer from the Air Force Academy, was everywhere 5 solo, 9 assists, 2 TFL and a PBU, might be looked at as a SS projection if he runs well in workouts and works on the fine points of coverage, PUDFA with an outside shot at the 7th with strong workouts.
Future Flash
#24 S 5'10 7/8 194 4.59 [est.] Sophomore S/CB Chris Kuzdale played both free safety and CB at times in the 4-25 defense. He seems to be more of a strong safety than a free safety. He has decent speed and quickness. He did a nice job on run support. He took good angles to the ball; usually forcing the play in the proper direction, he was effective as a tackler in the open field and flashed ball skills. He finished with 1 assist, and 2 picks. He has a chance as a reserve/special teams ace, future PUDFA.
