Adam Davis interviews Jonathan Wilhite
Interviewed on: Wednesday, May 9th, 2007 Adam Davis: Hey Jonathan, could you give us your most recent height, weight, and 40 time? Jonathan Wilhite: I'm 5-9 1/2, 187, and ran a 4.43 AD: How do you usually spend the off-season? JW: Trying to get bigger. Doing a lot of 1 on 1s with receivers, 7 on 7s, we have the whole team up here for the summer. We are all just working on getting better. AD: What are you looking forward to most this year?
JW: Every season you just look forward to getting better. I want to be the best corner I can be in all aspects of the game; man to man, zone, cover 2, deep 3 whatever. I want to be more physical and just an overall better player. AD: What are your personal goals for this season? JW: Well I would like to make All SEC. Be on someone’s All-American List. Mostly I want to help the team get as high as we can, hopefully a national championship. AD: What made you choose Auburn coming from a JUCO program? JW: Opportunity. They needed a corner and I had the chance to play right away. I wanted the tradition with the coaches and fans here at Auburn. AD: There have been a lot of Tigers in the NFL over the last few years, what kinds of things have they taught you? JW: Basically to go out there and show everyone what you got. Working with David (Irons), he went to the same JUCO as me and he taught me to be humble. The guys always say be humble and go out and contribute as much as to the team as possible. AD: Who’s the team to beat in the SEC? JW: Well you got LSU, Alabama, FL, Georgia, and Arkansas. In the SEC you have to be ready to play every week. Anyone can beat anyone. You just have to prepare each week for that week. AD: What have you been working on to improve your game? JW: Being more physical. I worked with Courtney Taylor and he helped me be more patient as a corner and having a short term memory. I’ve focused on the fundamentals, tackling and just being more physical. AD: Who is tougher to cover, a tall receiver or a shorter receiver? JW: I try to look at all of them the same. But with a big receiver they might be able to make more plays. I think I rather cover a big guy like I like the challenge. I enjoy the challenge. AD: What’s it like to play in the Alabama/Auburn game? JW: It’s wonderful! Oh man, I haven’t ever played in an atmosphere like that before. I’m from Louisiana, so I didn’t know about the importance of the game. You don’t want to loose that game, if you Alabama or Auburn. You just go out and play for 60 minutes, its wonderful man. AD: What do you feel are your biggest strengths? JW: I think man to man coverage. You get separation from the rest of the team and you have a specific job and duty. I also like my speed and athletic ability AD: Weaknesses? JW: The physical part of the game, getting off blocks, and making the big tackles. AD: |
