Steve Martin interviews Bruno Dorismond
Interviewed on: Sunday, May 13th, 2007 Steve Martin: Hi Bruno, have you got about 30 minutes right now? Bruno Dorismond: Sure. SM: It was nice meeting you at the UMaine pro day a few weeks back. BD: Oh yea, I remember. SM: So where are you now... are you home in Connecticut? BD: Not yet, but I'll be going back soon for a couple weeks. But then, I'll be back here (Orono, ME) training most of the summer. SM: Where were you born, Bruno? BD: I was born in New Jersey. We lived there for couple of years, then moved to Brooklyn for four years. My dad is from Haiti. Then, I have lived with my mom in New Canaan, Connecticut since 6th grade. SM: I see your mom is Marie Millard, but what is you dad's name? BD: Bunel Dorismond. He lives in Brooklyn. SM: Have you ever been to Haiti. BD: I visited there once, back in 8th grade. SM: Do you have any brothers or sisters? BD: I have three half-sisters, but we aren't close. SM: So when did you first start playing organized football? BD: Not until high school. I was a soccer player and a wrestler growing up. SM: Did you wrestle in high school? BD: Yes, all four years. SM: How successful were you as a wrestler? BD: I did pretty well. I was 3rd in the State in class M as a junior in the heavyweight division. My senior year I was first in class and 2nd in the state opens, and 3rd in New England. SM: That's great, man! So, when you got to be a freshman at New Canaan High, were you on the freshman team? BD: Yes. SM: What position did you play that very first year in football? BD: I played defensive tackle. SM: So, you have been a DT since you started football, huh? BD: Yes, pretty much. I did play a little offense in high school too, though. SM: Were you on JV or varsity your sophomore year? BD: Mostly JV, but I did play a little varsity, and a little bit of tight end. SM: And your junior year? BD: I started at defensive tackle, and played a little bit of tight end. SM: And your senior year? BD: I started both ways... defensive tackle and offensive guard. SM: Did you win any all-conference awards, or anything like that? BD: Yes. I was All-conference and all-state at defensive tackle for both my junior and senior years. SM: How did your teams do while you were at New Canaan? BD: We won the State title during my junior year and my senior year. SM: Wow, that's pretty awesome! How big a school was New Canaan? BD: We had about 1200 students, which is Class M. SM: How much recruiting attention did you receive coming out of high school? BD: Actually none except for UMaine. My grades were bad... UMaine came and visited just before my January wrestling matches of my senior year, and they were my only offer. SM: Did you go Prop 48? BD: Well, I was going to have to, but then I was able to get my grades up during my senior year enough so I didn't have to. SM: What year did you graduate? BD: '03. SM: Did you redshirt that fall at UMaine? BD: Yes. SM: No academic restrictions or anything? BD: No. SM: I know you have gotten more and more playing time each year, and that is good to see, but what will it be like playing without Mike (DeVito, UMaine DT) in there this year? BD: It will be tougher, he was a very good player. SM: What do you see as your unique strengths as a college DT? BD: Hmmm... that's kinda tough... I would say being able to understand schemes. My bull rush. My variety of moves, like club, swim, etc. SM: What are some things you are still working to get better at? BD: My pass rush... I know I have a lot more room for improvement there. SM: You guys run a base 4-3, right? BD: Yes. SM: Did you see a lot of double teams last year? BD: Quite a few yes, but I got a lot of 1-on-1 because of Mike too. I expect to get a lot more double teaming now. SM: Who will likely be stepping up to fill Mike's shoes? BD: A guy like Brian Greer, or Reggie Paramour... we've got some options there. SM: How does football rank in terms of your life priorities? BD: Oh, it ranks pretty high... I'd say after family and just behind my academics. SM: Are you one of these guys who sets personal goals for himself heading into a season. BD: Not really. I always just want to do my best... you know, whatever it takes to help my team win. SM: What is your major, Bruno? BD: Child development with a minor in sociology. SM: What is your overall GPA now? BD: 2.76 SM: Wow, that's very good, Bruno! Congratulations. BD: Thanks. SM: What do you plan to do with your major if football doesn't work out for you? BD: I'm not sure... maybe get a master's degree and become a special ed teacher. SM: Would you get into coaching? BD: Maybe yea... high school football. SM: OK, well it's been great talking with you again. I hope we'll see you around on the website. And, good luck to you and the whole squad this fall. BD: Thanks. |
