Jim ODell: Thanks for taking time out to do this interview Hugh.
Hugh Charles: No problem.
JO: I really appreciate it. Can you tell me your accurate height and weight?
HC: I am 5 ft 8, 190.
JO: What about you most recent 40 time?
HC: We ran right after the Spring game. Coach Hawkins had us run on the turf. I ran a 4.48.
JO: Wow, that's fast! So, let's talk about your early football days. How old were you when you started playing Pop Warner football?
HC: It's funny, but in Texas they did not call it Pop Warner, they called it KFL, for Keller Football League. I never heard the term Pop Warner until the guys from California started saying it. I started playing at age 8, and I always played running back.
JO: Sweet. Tell me about your High School experience? And by the way, where is Keller, Texas?
HC: Keller is between Dallas and Ft. Worth. I played running back and some defensive back, coach had me play defense if the other team had a good receiver. I also ran back kicks. I played varsity for three years there.
JO: Who else recruited you out of high school, and why did you choose Colorado?
HC: I was heavily recruited by Texas A and M. Also Arizona, Kansas State, Kansas, and Georgia Tech. I chose Colorado for three reasons; to go out of state, the education, and playing time.
JO: Smart move. So, how are things under coach Hawkins going now that he is in his second year?
HC: Things are going great! The Spring ball was the best I have ever been involved with. He has guys believing in his system, not just the players but the coaches too.
JO: How does the offense look?
HC: Good. Coach (Jeff) Grimes has the offensive line looking real good. He is doing a great job with the guys there. They are big and physical.
JO: I purchased a few pre-season college football publications. One of them said you were an explosive yet inconsistent player. How do you respond to that?
HC: I don't pay attention to any of that. I just go out and do my job.
JO: You are a smart man! How's the competition at the running back position? I see that JC transfer P.T. Gates has come in, a highly talented recruit.
HC: He has yet to arrive, I think due to grades, I am not sure. I am a senior and I feel I am the man, I have been the starter so it's my job to lose. I love the competition and feel it only makes me better.
JO: What are your personal goals this year?
HC: 1500 yards, and to get more confidence and to let the coaches see I am doing all I can to help win games.
JO: Great! If you don't get to play another down of football after this season, what would you do?
HC: I'd work back in Texas with my parents' business.
JO: Nice. Well, I really do appreciate you talking to me Hugh. Best of luck to you and the rest of the Buffs!
HC: Thank you too.
