Round 1
  1. Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska
  2. Ndamukong Suh has dominated this year. He leads the team in tackles for the second straight year, he has two interceptions, numerous pass break ups and has even blocked to kicks. He is very disruptive and he can bring some much needed production to a defensive line that hasn't had much since Warren Sapp and Simion Rice where playing there.
  3. Eric Berry S Tennessee
  4. Last year before the combine I believed that Malcolm Jenkins would be staying in state and playing for the Browns. But he put up poor 40 times and fell out of top 10 consideration. The Browns however never addressed the secondary in the draft even though they lost their starting safety Sean Jones to the Eagles in the off season. Berry would upgrade any secondary he joins. He was very good the past couple of years, but now he has the legendary Monte Kiffin teaching him the nuances of defense. Look for him to make an immediate impact in the NFL.
  5. Jake Locker QB Washington
  6. Marc Bulger has been a good quarterback in the league, but his time as the starter is nearing the end. The Rams passed on Matt Ryan in 2008 and Mark Sanchez in 2009. They cannot afford to pass on another top level quarterback this year. Personally I think Locker should come back for his senior year and continue to develop under new coach Steve Sarkisian, but when his stock is this high its hard to pass up.
  7. Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State
  8. Look for the Lions to continue to go after best player available and Okung fits right in there. Okung has shown this year that he has excellent footwork that is needed to be an elite left tackle. Against fellow 1st round prospect Sergio Kindle Okung neutrilized Kindle. Okung right now is a lock to be a top five pick and could be in consideration for the number one spot. This will be a much improvement for the Lions over Jeff Backus who they could move to guard.
  9. Rolando McClain LB Alabama
  10. The Chiefs enter the second draft with Scott Piloi running the show and would love to get an offensive lineman like Russell Okung or a safety like Eric Berry, but with both off the board they have to look elsewhere. Right now the two starting inside linebackers in the 3-4 are Damarrio Williams and Corey Mays. Not exactly setting the world on fire. Here they can get McClain who has been great so far this year. McClain has experience playing in the middle of the 3-4 at Alabama so this should be a seamless transition for him.
  11. Carlos Dunlap DE Florida
  12. I've had the Raiders going with Taylor Mays for a while and still think in that direction, but since they invested a second round pick in Michael Mitchell I could see them looking a different way. Al Davis still loves his freakish athletes and Dunlap is one of them.
  13. Gerold McCoy DT Oklahoma
  14. Well the Titans are not the same team that finished last year with the best regular season record. They probably could use a different quarterback, but there is nobody here worth that pick. They have also missed the presence of Albert Haynesworth who left in free agency. Here they have the chance to land another dominate defensive tackle that could follow in Haynesworth's foot steps.
  15. Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma
  16. Sam Bradford recently underwent surgury on his shoulder performed by Dr. James Andrews. The same guy that repaired Drew Brees' injuried shoulder. Also Dr. James Andrews is the team doctor of the Washington Redskins....hmmm. Bradford should make a complete recovery and with the Redskins likely looking for a new quarterback they will be in line to fully know how capable he is.
  17. Jahvid Best RB California
  18. The Seahawks have not had a viable running threat since the MVP season of Shawn Alexander years ago. They brought in Julius Jones and Ederrin James, but both have not got it done. It time to look for a quality running back with some playmaking ability.
  19. Taylor Mays S USC
  20. (From Carolina) The 49ers are benefiting here from the lack of success of the Panthers. The 49ers have had some good success this season, but could use some help in the secondary. Mays is a safety in a linebackers body. He is very similar to Adrain Wilson from the Cardinals. He should be a good fit in the 49ers 3-4 defense where he can use his good tackling skills in run support and even blitz some.
  21. Trent Williams OT Oklahoma
  22. The Bills traded away disgruntled left tackle Jason Peters before the draft. The plan was to move Langston Walker from right tackle to left tackle. Well the experiment failed. Walker was awful and was eventually cut. Williams is best suited to play right tackle in the NFL, but is still good enough to play both spots. This will help him see the field right away.
  23. Dez Bryant WR Oklahoma State
  24. Mike Sims-Walker has come out of no where and had a great start in his second year. This has given quarterback David Garrard a go to receiver he has never enjoyed. However I'm anxious to see if Walker can keep this up. And even though he can they still lack playmakers to go with him. Williams is an elite route runner that has great hands. Having him on the same team as Tory Holt will only make him better.
  25. Damion Williams WR USC
  26. Bill Parcells loves to draft linebackers and defensive backs, and its tempting to think that they could go after Rolando McClain. However they are desperate for a receiver. Ted Ginn Jr. has disappointed and they almost pulled the trigger on a trade that would have sent him to Baltimore. They need somebody to come in and be the number one receiver that Chad Henne needs. Williams is an excellent route runner and would be a very good possession receiver.
  27. Terrence Cody NT Alabama
  28. I've really been down on Cody for a while, but he is starting to impress me a lot. He seems to be in a lot better shape and is more motivated than he was last year. The 49ers could really use some help in the middle of their 3-4 defensive line. Plus Mike Singleterry would be the perfect coach to keep Cody motivated and ready to go.
  29. Aurther Jones DT/DE Syracuse
  30. I've had the Jets taking a receiver here for a while, but with Braylon Edwards joining the team in a trade that thought goes out the window. Here they can look to add pieces to their defensive line and get a dynamic defensive tackle in Jones who can slide over and play in the 5 technique defensive end in their 3-4 defense.
  31. Brandon Spikes LB Florida
  32. (From Bears) The Broncos are the suprise of the NFL. I don't know one person that predicted the Broncos to be where they are at now. A big part of this is their defense. Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan is a big reason why. Look for them to continue to build the defense up. Spikes would be an excellent fit.
  33. Charles Brown OT USC
  34. The Chargers offensive line has not been the same the last couple of years. Marcus McNeil enjoyed a great rookie season, but has not played to that same level since. Something needs to be done and bringing in somebody could be the answer. Brown has been shooting up draft boards and would be an excellent left tackle.
  35. Trevard Lindley CB Kentucky
  36. The Giants have toyed with moving cornerback Terrell Thomas to safety where they feel he will be a better fit. But with the lack of good depth at corner they have forced to leave him there. Here they can get a big physial corner that would allow them to make the move.
  37. Earl Thomas S Texas
  38. Earl Thomas has come on strong this year. He was thought to be a mid second round pick, but has been playing lights out. Showing good ball skills and tackling ability. The Texans have young playmakers all over the defense, except safety. Look for them to get the local kid to help take them to the next level.
  39. Jerry Hughes DE/LB TCU
  40. Arizona's offense should be set for a while, so they can look to find building blocks for their defense. Hughes is a former running back prospect that has been very explosive rushing the passer. He should translate well to the rush linebacker spot in the Cardinals 3-4 defense.
  41. Sergio Kindle DE/LB Texas
  42. Offensive line has been a big issue, but it looks like TJ Lang is starting to develop into a solid tackle. They still could look at addressing the position, but might choose so later in the draft. Here they can get a great value pick with Kindle. Aaron Kappman is not fitting in well with the Packers 3-4 and looks to just be a 4-3 defensive end. They need somebody opposite of Clay Matthews to provide the pass rusher. Kindle has elite skills, but hasn't put up the huge numbers that many thought he would. But he is still a good prospect and a great value here.
  43. Sean Weatherspoon LB Missouri
  44. The Falcons let their two starting outside linebackers leave in free agency last year and only brought in Mike Peterson. While their defense has played well they could look at improving their linebacking core and moving Peterson to the back up spot.
  45. Brandon LaFell WR LSU
  46. The Ravens have been looking for a true number one wide receiver for a while, but haven't been able to pull the trigger on a trade. With the strong receiving class this year they could decide to draft one. LaFell is a big bodied possession receiver that would give Joe Flacco a solid target for years to come.
  47. Eric Norwood LB South Carolina
  48. The Eagles have very good starting linebackers, but injuries have exposed their lack of depth. Norwood has excelled since being moved to the linebacker spot and his skills that he has rushing the passer will help him in their blitz happy defense.
  49. Marvin Austin DE/DT North Carolina
  50. Chris Canty was let go before the season and Igor Oshansky was brought in. Oshansky isn't a bad defensive end, but San Diego had no problem letting him go. An upgrade at the position would be a good idea to address.
  51. Syd'Quan Thompson CB California
  52. The defending Super Bowl champions lost starting cornerback Bryant McFadden in free agency to the Cardinals. Thompson isn't very big, but he is tough and a sure tackler which makes up for his height.
  53. Morgan Burnett S Georgia Tech
  54. The Bengals had a very good draft last year and added many pieces to their team that has allowed them to have such a good start to the season. Here they can add a safety that fits well into their system.
  55. Vince Ogalbaase DT/DE Duke
  56. don't think there was a single person that saw the Richard Seymor trade coming. But they did get one heck of a deal out of it, so all the power to them. However they do need to find a replacement for him. Ogalbaase is a very good defensive tackle and should make an easy transition to the 3-4 defensive end.
  57. Brian Bulaga OT Iowa
  58. (From Broncos) Bulaga has come back from injury and helped the Hawkeyes to an undefeated season so far. The Seahawks have an aging offensive line and could use some young players to come in and learn and eventually take over.
  59. Joe Haden CB Florida
  60. The Vikings have been looking for a corner opposite of Winfield for a while, but have been unsuccesfull.
  61. Ciron Black OT LSU
  62. For the longest time I've had the Colts targeting a receiver with their first round pick, but with the emergence of Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie I doubt they go down that road anymore. They do need some help along the offensive line at the tackle position.
  63. Navorro Bowman LB Penn State
  64. The Saints planned on drafting AJ Hawk before Reggie Bush fell into their lap. Last year Brian Cushing was a possibility for them. Here they have the opprotunity to get an athletic linebacker to pair up next to Jonathan Vilma.

ravens pick looks good, is the receiving class that strong this?
Posted by Johanns21 on 11/4/09 - 10:21AM
I'm sorry REIG, but I don't understand your question. Are you asking me if this year's receiving class is good?
Posted by Lionsman11 on 11/4/09 - 3:27PM
Wow, all I can say is Super Bowl 49ers! Would they ever be good after this draft. I love the Lions pick as well. Do you really feel McClain is better than Spikes? I think Spikes is better than Curry who was a top 5 pick last year. Locker is debatable going that high. I am also not too sure on the Packers going with another 3-4 OLB. They just drafted Clay Matthews last year who has had a very good rookie season, and they have Aaron Kampan, who is a top 5 pass rusher in this league. I think a LT such as Brian Bulaga would be a better option.

I think Bulaga has cancer but that could be a rumor, Lionsman. Also Spikes could fall after that eye gouging incident, but you never know Percy Harvin did not fall last year after his drug concerns went public. And yes Johanns I was asking, I have not been watching that much college football this year.

Personally I think that it has a good class. Dez Bryant and Damion Williams are the only two elite prospects. But you have Arrelious Benn, Brandon LaFell, Dezmon Briscoe, Mardy Gilyard and Golden Tate who all have legitamit shots at being first round talent. Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas, Danario Alexander, Naaman Roosevelt, Jordan Shipley, and Mike Williams are all pretty solid too.

I think the whole Bulaga cancer story is a rumor. I haven't seen any big media websites pick the story up. He was hurt this year for a while, but has come back and played good.

I think McClain and Spikes are pretty close. I don't feel the eye gouging thing is going to hurt Spikes either. McClain is having a great season and feel he will go first out of the two because he plays the inside linebacker spot in the 3-4 (which so many teams do now days) and under former NFL and defensive guru Nick Saban.

Lionsman I understand what you are saying about the Packers, but like I said in the comments, Kapman isn't making the transition too well. I could see them moving him. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody like Jerry Hughes or Kindle where available they would take them. Clay Matthews is still more of a coverage outside backer and Kindle could be the guy that rushes more often.

you have created my nightmare for the Chiefs. Berry, Suh and Okung all gone before we get to draft. I like McClain and he would upgrade our LB core, but I think passrushing OLB would be more important. Plus, Pioli has shown that he will reach for a player that he wants (Tyson Jackson at #3) if he can't find a trade partner to move down. I might even see a Dez Bryant here. Get Cassel a weapon to team with D.Bowe

I completely understand what you are saying KingCarl. It was a hard decision coming up with who they would go for. I was going to go with Hughes, but it didn't feel right. Bryant was a thought too. However their inside linebackers are not ver good. I got to watch Demarrio Williams in college and really like him, but I don't know if he is starting material anymore. McClain to me seemed to be the good fit.

Love Spikes' intensity, would be a great pick up.

what are your thoughts on the Chiefs selecting Jahvid Best, especially in using your scenario here. I think we would all agree that LJ has seen his last days as a Chief (even if he isn't released, I believe Todd Haley will hold a grudge and make LJ inactive on all remaining game days). Then the question becomes, is Jahvid the best RB available in this draft? Are his skills set inline with the "spread" type formations that Haley likes to use (3 and 4 WR from a shotgun formation)? I am trapped in the Mid-West and don't get to see alot of Cal games. I did catch the one agianst Minnesota and Jahvid was very impressive. He and Eric Decker (Minn. WR) stole the show.

Best is an option. I know that I have him going 9, but I'm think that me and others have overrated him. He has put up all good numbers against bad teams so it would be nice to see him do it aginst a quality team. The Cheifs could be an option, but Best isn't an every down back and I think is really similar to Jamaal Charles. I think the Cheifs will dump Johnson and pick somebody in the draft, but I look for them to go after scmebody that will complement Charles. They should have a shot at Jonathan Dywer in the early second round.

By the way King Carl....now that Carl Peterson is gone are you going to create a new user account called KingPioli's5yearplan??? I'm sorry I'm just kidding....I just couldn't resist.
Posted by Lionsman11 on 11/5/09 - 7:16PM
Johanns, Kampman has been improving each week and they are starting to see him evolve to the 3-4. Kampman is too good of a player to just get rid of due to a system. The Packers knew what they had in him when they changed to the 3-4, and if they knew the 3-4 would not work for him, they may not have made the adjustment. Kampman is staying, and he is staying as the leader of that defense. I highly doubt they will get rid of him for a rookie. I also have to say false on Matthews being a coverage OLB. He has had 3 sacks and has some great pass rushing moves and great speed on the edge.
Posted by Johanns21 on 11/5/09 - 7:23PM
I never said that the Packers where going to move Kapman. I said I wouldn't be surprised. I don't know, every time I've seen him play he has looked lost. That doesn't mean that he can't get better or they are going to give up on him. What I was saying is that Kindle is a very good talent and would be a very good value there. There is nothing wrong with them drafting him and using him with a rotation with Kapman and Matthews, or having a package with all three of them. On Matthews. I know that he has good rushing skills, but he isn't a pure 3-4 pass rusher all the time. They tend to use him more in coverage then they do rushing him. And 3 sacks isn't anything to write home about. Personally I think they will look for Offensive tackle there, but with Trent Williams and Charles Brown gone, there might not be anybody at that position worth that high of a pick.
Posted by Lionsman11 on 11/5/09 - 8:59PM
Yes, but Johanns, I think that the Packers are going to be quick to take another position no matter how good Kindle may be. 3 sacks for a rookie is a good number at this point in the season for Matthews. As for Kampman, its not that he looks lost, it is just he is trying to do too much. Against the Lions when I was watching him, they were moving him all around. If anything, the Packers should get a DE. Like I said, Kampman is doing too much. Let's not forget that another OT may rise up on the boards, some juniors may come out, or the Packers could make a reach for a player. A RB is also a viable option with the regression of Ryan Grant. After all, they must need help at RB if they had to bring back Ahman Green!
Posted by Johanns21 on 11/6/09 - 7:28AM
I agree with you that another tackle could rise up, but no I don't feel comfortable putting any body else that high. The Packers pick was a tough one for me.
