2010 Team Needs:
HB Houston will most likely spend the majority of its 2009 draft with an towards solidifying the team’s current holes on defense, particularly as they exist in the secondary, and more precisely, at strong safety. The main priority for the Texans was to figure out what to do with CB Dunta Robinson, who was slapped with the franchise tag. He is coming off a serious injury, but he returned partway through last season and took back his starting job. He was not yet at 100 percent, but his knee held up well and Robinson would have commanded big money in an open market. Darrell McClover, LB; and Dan Orlovsky, are the free agents the Texans have signed so far, these are not players that change franchises, unless there is a philosophical shift the team will continue to look to the draft to improve. Having released Will Demps, Ahman Green, Morlon Greenwood and Ephraim Salaam, Greenwood’s absence is the only one that has thus far been addressed in free agency.
Still hoping to sign long-term, Robinson will likely be shooting for around $20-23 million in guaranteed money - an amount the Texans haven't given anyone other than Mario Williams in their short history. As for the rest of the current players facing possible free agency, there are no other players that will command nearly as much of their time or money as Robinson will.
Linebacker is an additional area of concern, as the Texans hope to find someone with enough talent to match the speed and overall playmaking ability of Demeco Ryans at the second level; Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi have shown promise, but are not progressing at the pace originally expected. Adding a strong presence on the opposite end of the defensive line at Mario Williams, such as Aaron Maybin or even a good pass rushing OLB such as Clay Matthews would go a long way in making play off the corners even better than it already is for Houston, but equally important could be finding a more physical running back that specializes in both pass-blocking and carrying the ball on short yardage downs or whenever Steve Slaton is brought off the field. Most Pressing Needs:
1. Defensive end: At 2 levels of the defense the team is likely to focus on bolstering their pass rush in the early rounds by signing a defensive end to help complement Mario Williams, the signing of Antonio Smith did little to change that.
2. Linebacker: The Texans have questions surrounding young starters Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi. If they could get a big-play outside linebacker, it would be a boon for them, Clint Sintim, Aaron Maybin, Larry English, and they'd pull something sprinting to take Everette Brown if he somehow fell to them.
3. Running back: The Texans still need a situational-type back to spell Steve Slaton. He must be a little bigger and fit well into the zone-blocking scheme, Rashad Jennings, Cedric Peerman, Arian Foster, Javarris Williams are all possibilities.
- Steve Slaton makes up 1/2 the Texans future at this position but they currently lack the other 1/2.
OLB - With DeMeco Ryans anchoring the middle of this linebacking corps the Texans could do with putting some better talent alongside him.
S - The Texans secondary looks most shaky at the safety positions and upgrades at either position would help the Texans.
