2010 Team Needs:
Tennessee Titans (6 draft picks) – C, DT, CB, OG, OT The Titans are coming off a surprisingly strong 13-3 season, but the loss of Defensive Line ‘Bell Cow’ Albert Haynesworth means that DT will be a position of concern in the upcoming draft, unfortunately for them this is a pretty sparse crop of DTs. The Titans have nice complementary pieces in Tony Brown and Jason Jones, but they don't yet know how Jones would do with more responsibility on him. The inking of Jovan Haye, DT is in my mind one of the more underrated signings in this free agency period, but he’s no Haynesworth.
If they can’t move up into the top 15-20 to get Raji or Jerry then: Ron Brace of B.C, SJSU’s rising Jarron Gilbert, "Ziggy" Hood and Sen'Derrick Marks will be in mind in the 2nd. Late on day 1 or early day 2, in the 2nd or in 3rd rounds look for the Titans to go after a DT.
The Titans surprised many with literal gray beard Kerry Collins leading them as the best regular-season team in the AFC. However, the Ravens exposed the Titans few but serious flaws, they lack a threat in the passing game that forces you to distort your defensive game plan if you can stop the run. They need a little bit of help on both sides of the ball. It appears that the Tennessee Titans may finally use a first round pick on a wide receiver. But with the 30th overall pick, the Titans may not have a shot arNorth Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks, Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey, Rutgers’ Kenny Britt and others. Nicks and Heyward-Bey are field stretchers with solid elusiveness, while Britt is a bigger target with greater red zone ability. Other potential targets include Georgia’s Mohamed Massaquoi and Oklahoma’s Juaquin Iglesias, who could be available in the middle rounds.
Beyond DT and WR the Titans do have a few concerns that need to be addressed. Also on offense they need to find a replacement soon for Kevin Mawae who may not have much left in the tank. Receiver is also a position of need not since 2004 has Tennessee had a 1,000 yard receiver Since Mason and Bennett both accomplished the feat. If Eric Wood or Antoine Caldwell is on the board when the Titans pick in the 2nd I’d be surprised if they passed on them.
Upgrading the pass attack as well would do wonders in balancing the offensive attack of a team which last year exposed far too great a reliance upon a running game featuring first-year running back from East Carolina, Chris Johnson, as a main weapon by which to move the ball. Nate Washington is a solid #2 WR but his signing is probably not the answer. A potential 1000-yard wide receiver (when Derrick Mason and Drew Bennett are remembered so fondly it speaks volumes). Of the current crop of wideouts, only Justin Gage showed consistency.
Another pressing need will be for a franchise LCB to go along with Courtland Finnegan. CB Sean Smith from Utah would fill those holes well as options in the first round, but they may decide to wait.
Other less immediate pressing needs for the Titans would be depth at offensive line, and a possible QB to groom until they decide who their QB of the future is. Tennessee relies on its running game heavily, and Chris Johnson was a home run draft pick last year, but when he went out with an ankle injury in the playoffs, the Titans offense reverted to its old moribund self.
With Haynesworth gone, the Titans are a different team, everything on their defense ran through him at defensive tackle, with the DT recently acquired by Washington they lost his ability not only to occupy two blockers and still be effective against the run, yet also be a force in rushing the passer from the interior (8.5 sacks) which was key the whole defensive line. It was that play that allowed the Titans to blitz rarely, let linebackers make tackles and defensive backs play in coverage without worrying about holes caused by blitzes. Tennessee proved last year it was a major contender in the AFC South and will find the 2009 version of its squad hoping to play to that level. Center could use some help, given that Kevin Mawae is nearing the end of his career, while on defense, cornerback could look to become all-the-more-dangerous a position could the Titans land another lockdown player to match up with Courtland Finnegan. The defensive line is extremely aggressive, but now has to replace Albert Haynesworth at the defensive tackle position. The Titans have definitely noticed how much one DT can influence a game, with superstar Albert Haynesworth, but when he is not in the game the Titans defense weakens. Quarterback is far from a pressing need heading into April, but might prove a position where acquiring a moldable talent now could end up paying off huge dividends down the road Rhett Bomar, Steven McGee, Todd Boeckman and Sean Glennon .
With the recent downgrading of the entire CB crop corners like: WFU’s Alphonso Smith, Trevard Lindley from Kentucky or D.J Moore from Vanderbilt may be available later than previously projected and they’d love to see Mike Mickens fall to them, if they wait until the middle or later rounds Javier Arenas, Joe Burnett, Jairus Byrd, Tony Carter and Derrick ‘DJ’ Clark are names you might hear names such as Brandon Hughes or Coye Francies if he can convince Fisher he’s not another character risk, which went okay with LenDale White, but not so much with Adam ‘Insert Crime Spree Joke Here’ Jones. One of the most urgent positions that may need to be filled is at Center since
3. Defensive back: The starters at both cornerback and safety are solid with three of the four making the Pro Bowl. It is behind them where the issues lie. Nickel back/safety Vincent Fuller, and key backup corners Chris Carr and Eric King are all free agents. The Titans say they want to re-sign Carr and Fuller, especially, but they also need to bring in help at cornerback, probably in the draft, to groom as an eventual replacement for Nick Harper, who can be a free agent after '09.
WR - Does it surprise me that Vince Young is said to be depressed? Not in the slightest, especially when you look at his choice of receivers.
DT - If Albert Haynesworth chooses to leave in free agency this year the Titans will have one heck of a hole to fill.
CB - Cortland Finnegan is one of the better young corners in the game but he needs someone on the other side with similar skills if the Titans secondary is to start shutting people down.
