 '08 Draft Review:

2008 Jaguars Draft Review

1 (8) Derrick Harvey Florida DE- Moving up to 8 to select Harvey was a great decision. They moved up for very cheap and got one of the top players ont their boards. The move up was necessary to ensure they got the guy they wanted. Harvey is a all around stud. On running plays to his side last year, the oppposing team averaged -.6 yards per carry. Only 1 team ran for a 1st towards Harvey, which was Michigan in the Capital One Bowl Game when his opposition was number 1 overall pick, Jake Long. He had 17 tackles for loss, 6 for no gain and 8.5 sacks. Has good size at 6 foot 5, 272 pounds and a 81 inch wing span. The Jaguars are hoping for him to max out at around 285. He really has everything you want in a DE. Good explosvieness around the edge, uses his hands,  rushes the passer well and stops the run equally well. Look for him to develop into a all around stud at DE at the next level. Grade:A

2 (52) Quentin Groves Auburn DE- Would've most likely been a top 15 pick had he came out after his amazing Junior season. His play wasn't as good in 2007 as it was in 2006, which led to him falling out of the 1st.  His 1st three seasons he had a combined 29 TFL and 23 sacks, but last year he managed only 7 TFL and only 3 sacks. Im surprised that he was here this late. A reliable tackler who has great explosiveness, speed, versatility, and athleticism. Is very smart and instinctive. Look for him to be a Osi Umenyiora type player. Grade: A

5 (155) Thomas Williams USC LB- Started 14 games over his career at the strong and middle linebacker and fullback position. Was voted USC's most inspirational player. Not amazing at anything, but good at everything he does. He is a special teams stud. Can cover kicks and has a history at FB so can also block in the return game. Everyone loves to play with him due to his emotion. Coach Del Rio will love his versatility. Grade: B

5 (159) Trae Williams USF CB- I thought he would for sure be gone by now. Some preferred him to teammate Mike Jenkins who went 25th overall to the Cowboys. He has tons of experience and is a hard worker. Isn't a good open field tackler, but is smart and holds on until help arrives. Has good speed and fluid hips to stay with the most agile recievers. He is a ballhawk and has great athletic ability. In the pass happy AFC, it's never bad to have too many CBs. Grade: A

7 (213) Chauncey Washington USC HB-He's been overshadowed throughout his early career at USC by Lendale White and Reggie Bush. The last two years he started and was the teams leading runner. When he was on the field though, he was a good back. He has good speed and powers through any arm tackles.  He isn't too flashy, but he just manages to get the job done. Will be Fred Taylor's replacement when he retires. Proboly won't play too much this year.  Grade: A

Overall- The Jaguars made a very good move, moving all the way up from pick 26 to the eigth overall selection without even giving up a 2nd rounder or a future 1st. Just two 3rd rounders and a 4th. Some people projected the Jags to trade their first rounder for Jason Taylor. They didn't do that, but still addressed there biggest need: rushing the passer. They saw the Giants take out the Patriots by rushing the passer, something the Jaguars couldn't do in the playoffs and they saw themselves eliminated.  Harvey and Groves will be making a big impact their rookie years, while the others for now will contribute on special teams and provide depth. The 3 late round picks, all will make the team and will proboly contribute in the future. Look for the Jaguars to make another step forward  and vault into the elite class of the AFC now that they've got an improved pass rush. Grade: A
