 '08 Draft Review:

1. Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona

Antoine was, in my opinion, the best cover corner in this draft.  He played at a high level in the Pac-10 for the past 3 years, and always gave top WR's a tough time.  He plays very physical and with the departure of Drayton Florence, Cason has the ability to come in and immediately play for the Chargers.  The main knock was his lack of speed, but with him isolated in the NFL, and especially going up against taller more physical receivers, he should be a great weapon.

Grade: B

3. Jacob Hester, FB/RB, LSU

Of all the wonderfully talented runningbacks on LSU's championship team of a season ago, Hester was the one to lead them in rushing.  He is a hard runner who doesn't shy away from contact and is a go to guy in key short yardage situations.  Excells in rolling off initial hits and falling forward for the extra yards.  I like this pick, but feel he was a little bit of a reach in the 3rd.  However, with Michael Turner to Atlanta, Hester will provide some nice depth behind LT and will convert some key short yardage plays.

Grade: B-

5. Marcus Thomas, RB, UTEP

Apparently they didn't feel like they got enough of a bruiser in Hester, so they took another monster of a runningback in Thomas.  He has wonderful size at 6-2, 215, but lacks breakaway speed.  He has good vision andhits the whole hard. My complaint is that the Chargers had bigger needs to fill here.

Grade: C

6. DeJuan Tribble, CB, Boston College

A very solid pick in the 6th round.  Tribble was an integral part of BC's magical 2007 run.  He has very good coverage skills and quickness, but lacks ideal size and leaping ability.  However, at this point you can't worry about the small things, which makes this a good pick for San Diego.

Grade: B+

7. Corey Clark, OT, Texas A&M

Clark has good size and comes from a good program in A&M.  Probably better picks around, but the Chargers have had recent success in developing offensive lineman, so Clark has a just to develop as a practice squad player next season.

Grade: C+

Overall:

The Chargers really didn't do anything special.  I like Cason, who should be able to come in and immediately start across from Cromartie, or at least be a nickel corner.  Other than that though, they picked up only one impact player in Hester, who I feel won't be able to duplicate his college successes at the next level. The Chargers didn't really have many holes to feel due to the immense amount of talent already on their roster, but with a few more drafts like this, they will right back where they were a few years ago, on the bottom of the AFC West.

Overall Grade:

C+
