 '08 Draft Review:

Round 1 (31) - Kenny Phillips, S, Miami FL
The Giants had one big area of need with Gibril Wilson moving on via free agency, and they filled it with the safety atop most teams' boards. The Giants hope that he's next in the line of quality safeties from the U. Phillips will immediately challenge James Butler for the starting role.
Grade: A

Round 2 (63) - Terrell Thomas, CB, USC
Thomas is a big, physical corner from a major program. He's a versatile player who might allow the Giants to move Phillips to SS when Sammy Knight is done because Thomas probably projects better as a free safety with his size and lack of deep speed. He looks to be a fourth or fifth corner on the current roster.
Grade: C

Round 3 (95) - Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan
This is the ultimate boom/bust pick. There's no denying that Manningham has first-round talent (heck, if you listened to ESPN on draft day, you'd think he should've been taken first overall). Manningham's immaturity helped him fall this far. Lying to NFL teams about his marijuana use, showing inconsistent effort on/off the field, and a reported 6 on his Wonderlic scared many teams into removing him from their boards entirely. With the somewhat fragile state of the Giants lockerroom, there's the potential for this selection to bite the Giants in the rear. One can only hope that former Michigan WR Amani Toomer takes on a mentoring role and helps Manningham quiet his critics.
Grade: B-

Round 4 (123) - Bryan Kehl, LB, BYU
Kehl is a fantastic athlete who was very productive at BYU while still flying under the radar. He could compete at either OLB position for the Giants. If he shows well at the SAM, he might allow the Giants to move Kiwanuka back to his more natural DE position.
Grade: B

Round 5 (165) - Jonathan Goff, LB, Vanderbilt
It's a bit of a surprise that Goff slid this far, but the Giants aren't complaining. Goff was productive and is an intelligent, athletic player. He'll push Chase Blackburn for the backup MLB spot and should be a staple on special teams coverage units from jump.
Grade: B+

Round 6 (198) - Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky
Apparently the Giants like the Kentucky QBs as they brought Woodson in to battle former Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen for a spot behind Eli Manning and David Carr. Woodson was considered to be the top QB in this draft class early in the 2007 season, but some of his flaws were exposed and he struggled at the Senior Bowl and saw his stock slide. Woodson still has the potential to be a starting-caliber QB in the league and, if nothing else, provides the Giants with a solid backup or potential trade bait in a few years.
Grade: B+

Round 6 (199) - Robert Henderson, DE, Southern Mississippi
Henderson is a developmental project. He has a good size/speed combo and was productive at Southern Mississippi, but he'll have a hard time cracking an excellent DE rotation. Henderson will have to showcase his talents on special teams in camp in order to have any shot at making the final roster. He looks like a practice squadder.
Grade: C

Summary:
Once again, the Giants' scouting department seems to have an eye for talent and a willingness to take a chance here and there. There's no arguing with their 2007 draft success, and this class has every appearance of being yet another solid haul. The Giants filled their most pressing needs and added good depth at other positions.
Grade: A-
