 '08 Draft Review:

Round 2 (34) - Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
Many felt that Thomas could go as early as #11, but no receivers were taken in the first round, so Washington pounced on this big speedster who could challenge for a starting role immediately. Thomas is a one-year wonder in college, but seems to have the skills (including return ability) to excel in the NFL.
Grade: A

Round 2 (48) - Fred Davis, TE, USC
Davis is a good pass-catching TE, similar in some respects to Dustin Keller who went at the end of the first round. Davis is not a blocker and is more of an H-back like current Redskin Chris Cooley. He'll add immediate depth at that position as long as he shows the work ethic that many question.
Grade: C-

Round 2 (51) - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
Many people felt that Kelly was the best WR in this class until slow forty times and a temper tantrum directed at the Oklahoma coaching staff derailed his bid as a first rounder. Kelly is a big, productive receiver who is a hard-worker and a very good blocker. He has some of the best hands in this WR class. He'll battle Thomas and Randle-El for playing time immediately.
Grade: A

Round 3 (96) - Chad Rinehart, OL, Northern Iowa
Rinehart is a bit of a surprise pick here. He performed relatively well at the Senior Bowl, but proved to be fairly pedestrian during post-season workouts. Many feel that his best position will be inside, a shift from the OT position he played in college. He might step right in as the backup to Pete Kendall and be his eventual replacement at LG.
Grade: C

Round 4 (124) - Justin Tryon, CB, Arizona State
Tryon raised his stock with some outstanding post-season performances. He plays fast and is an excellent return specialist. His biggest flaw is his lack of height, but it's nothing too damaging as he has the ability to play bigger than he is.
Grade: B-

Round 6 (168) - Durant Brooks, P, Georgia Tech
Washington grabbed the only punter of the draft in Durant Brooks, and he's a good one. He should have little trouble unseating the incumbent Derrick Frost.
Grade: B

Round 6 (180) - Kareem Moore, S, Nicholls State
The Skins went for the little-known Moore here to provide some competition at FS for Reed Doughty. Don't be surprised if Moore claims the job from Doughty sooner than later. At the very least, Moore will be a huge asset on special teams.
Grade: B

Round 6 (186) - Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii
The mere fact that the new head coach is Jim Zorn makes this pick more appealing than it appears. Brennan was being talked about as one of the best QBs in the draft had he come out following his junior year, but he turned many off during his senior season and a terrible performance against an excellent Georgia team in the bowl game sealed his fate. Clearly the Skins are set at QB with Campbell and Collins, but Brennan will battle Sam Hollenbach for the role of emergency QB.
Grade: C

Round 7 (242) - Rob Jackson, DE, Kansas State
With the huge need that Washington as at DE, it's surprising that they waited so long to draft one. Jackson is a bit underrated and could push for the 3rd or 4th DE position during camp, however he looks more like a rotation guy than a front-line starter.
Grade: B-

Round 7 (249) - Chris Horton, SS, UCLA
Horton is a very physical safety and is a monster in the box, however he'll struggle in coverage with the faster skill players. His lack of speed pushed him this far down the board, but he's a football player and should serve as a competent backup to LaRon Landry.
Grade: B

Summary:
Washington did a real nice job of bolstering the edges of its offense in the 2nd round, but they largely ignored their front seven on defense, an area that could use some fresh blood. It's clear that Jim Zorn wants to install a potent offense and the pieces are there, but he didn't do Greg Blache (defensive coordinator) any favors.
Grade: C+
