Overview

Extremely productive player at the IAA level. One of only a handful of players at any level of college football to have four 1000-yard seasons. Barely missed breaking Marcel Shipp's UMass career rushing yardage totals. Runs very hard and hits holes quickly. A load to bring down. Really worked hard over the summer before the 2006 season to become trimmer and faster. Decent receiver and blocker. Not an elite prospect due to lack of topend speed or outstanding moves. Was a beast in the 2006 IAA playoffs, especially in the semi-finals on the road in front of a hostile Montana crowd. Played well at the East-West Shrine Game, but was STILL inexplicably shunned by the Combine selection committee.

Strengths

Hard-charging athlete who gives great effort. Strong, and exhibits good leg drive and determination. Willing blocker and decent receiver. Extremely productive. Knows how to make the most of every situation. Dedicated guy with great character. Lays it all out on the field.

Weaknesses

Not overly shifty or fast. Lacks versatility. Not a great receiver. Does not get asked to stay in and block that much. Has not faced elite competition. Pedestrian 4.8s at his pro day eliminated all chance of his being drafted late.

Projection

Because Steve worked so hard to trim down and made the 2006 season by far his best, he has a good shot at being a priority UDFA.

Second in career rushing at UMass behind current Arizona Cardinal, Marcel Shipp. Had a great senior year and showed his grit in the playoffs. Obviously, competition will be a knock on him. Hasn't been able to show off any receiving skills and is more likely to run over you than around you.

Huge post season push moves him up. Players play when it matters most and he's doing it.
