OverviewJoined the JMU program during the summer of 2006 as a transfer from Connecticut after being dismissed from the team. Came in and immediately played a key role on the Dukes' defensive line. Appeared in one game as a true freshman at Connecticut in 2004 and seven games in 2005. Started all 12 games for JMU in '06, earning 2nd-team all A-10 honors. Played linebacker throughout his high school career at Lincoln-Sudbury HS (Boston suburbs) where he was an all-state selection his senior year with 100+ tackles, 10 TFLs, and 6 sacks. Baranowsky had an impressive pro-day running the 3-Cone drill in 7.1 seconds, a 4.62 sec short shuttle, 8.5' broadjump and 32.5" vertical.
StrengthsPlays DT with the passion of a middle linebacker. Moves well for a big man. Consistently crushes the pocket at the IAA level. Powerful in both the upper (30 reps) and lower (600 squat) body. Gets a good push on the pass rush. Is a decent 2-way player who can stop the run AND rush the passer. A self-made man with a good motor. Tackles like a linebacker. Wants it.
WeaknessesIs still somewhat raw at the position after being a LB most of his life. Not big enough to be an NFL nose tackle, which is where his skill set might be best utilized. Lacks growth potential. Built up strength. Level of competition is a slight concern, although the JMU program is definitely on a par with most IA mid-major programs. Wears down late in some games and resorts to too much hand-fighting. Doesn't "close the deal" as often as he should on the pass rush.
ProjectionMay sneak into the tail end of the '08 draft, but will most likely be a mid-level UDFA.
