OverviewMartellus was a consensus prep All-American and three-year starter and a two-time all-district and All-Greater Houston selection at tight end for Alief Taylor High School. He was named a member of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine’s Super Team and was a finalist for the Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year. He is a very fine athlete who was also a preseason All-Greater Houston selection in basketball in 2004-05 and earned first-team Class 5A all-state honors from the Texas Sports Writers Association after hauling in a team-high 42 catches for 487 yards and six touchdowns as a senior in 2004. As a junior, Bennett had 13 catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Bennett averaged 23 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. A stud TE for the Aggies over the past two seasons, Martellus was named first-team all Big 12 two years in a row. Has played basketball for the Aggies basketball team. Ran very well at the Combine and helped himself achieve our #1 TE rating for the 2008 NFL draft as a result of his body of work there.
StrengthsHas top overall TE talent for the 2008 NFL draft. Still raw, but has a world of skills to develop. Massive frame. Looks like an elite power forward playing football (and, indeed, that's what he was in HS and at times, for the Aggies as well.) Superior athlete with very quick feet for a man of his dimensions. Unlimited upside. Very young. Splits out wide and plays like a huge receiver. Good hands. An absolute load to bring down. Willing and improving blocker when lined up as a blocker. Can block from either side of the line. Gets low when run blocking and uses his hands effectively. Solid, dual-threat TE. Fast.
WeaknessesMisses sometimes when cut blocking in the 2nd level. Overextends when blocking at times. Needs to keep developing his upper body. Not quite under control of all his parts when running routes. Not the most NFL-ready of this year's TE crop, but has the best upside of all of them. Needs to ge stronger up top and convert his natural speed to game speed on a more consistent basis.
ProjectionCould sneak into the first round, and is in the mix for the first TE off the board with Fred Davis, Jermichael Finley and Dustin Keller.
