Overview

An impressive physical specimen at the left tackle position with outstanding agility and quickness relative to his size ... considered by many to be the top offensive line prospect out of high school and one of the standouts of the 2005 recruiting class ... one of the best pro prospects on the offensive line and considered to be one of the best young offensive lineman in the nation ... has started in every game of his career at left tackle ... lost 25 pounds prior to the 2007 season, increasing his mobility ... 2007 Outland Trophy Watch List member for nation's best offensive lineman ... Second-Team All-American Preseason selection (Lindy's and CollegeFootballNews.com) ... First-Team All-SEC Preseason honoree (The Birmingham News, Lindy's and Phil Steele) ... Preseason Second-Team All-SEC selection (Athlon and Sporting News)... was a 2006 Freshman All-American (The Sporting News and Rivals.com) ... 2006 All-SEC Coaches selection ... earned Alabama's Up-Front and Offensive Player of the Year Awards as a sophomore in 2007 ... was a co-winner of the SEC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy along with Arkansas' Jonathan Luigs ... 2007 Coaches First-Team All-SEC selection ... shared the 2008 Paul Crane Offensive Lineman Award with Mike Johnson for his performance during spring practice.

Did not stay for the NFL Combine, and raised many eyebrows when he told the assembled folks that he had not yet begun working out, then flew out of Indy unannounced. He later said he was putting all of his eggs into the Alabama Pro Day basket (3/11/09) and did not impress in the drills there either. He posted 40-yard dash times of 5.28 and 5.33 seconds, did only a 25" vertical, a 7' 10" broad jump, a 7.88 three-cone drill, a 4.93 short shuttle, and only 19 bench press reps at 225 pounds.

Strengths

Smith is a seriously big guy for a LT and yet somehow retains all the athleticism and agility you would want from someone at that position. Regularly shuts down the top defensive ends at collegiate level. Also happens to be a very powerful run blocker who creates lots of holes for the Crimson Tide's rushing attack. Does not test well, but plays well.

Weaknesses

I'm sure he must have some weaknesses, I just haven't spotted them yet. No player is ever perfect. Smith may be looked at by most teams as an OG conversion, and he has a chance to do that and be a Pro-Bowl OG with exceptional OG pass blocking skills.

Projection

Jake Long was the #1 overall pick last year and may just have started a bit of a trend. Andre was a consensus Top 10 pick prior to the Combine and his Pro Day. Now, his status is very clouded, and he may have slipped all the way to the 2nd round as a conversion-OG project.

Easy top ten pick. Could be the best player in the draft. Character and fitness concerns are overblown. Fits best at right tackle. Could dominate for a decade.

No question worth of the top pick overall. Would be a steal if he drops past 3.
