Overview

Kentwan Balmer player at Weldon High School and was a member of the North Carolina Shrine Bowl Team. He finished his senior season with 113 tackles, 12 sacks, 8 pass breakups and 6 fumble recoveries. In college, 2004, he was one of 13 true freshmen to see playing action. Played in nine games at defensive end and ended the season with 1 tackle. In 2005 he played in all 11 games and started the final 3, finishing the season with 17 tackles, including 5 tackles for losses, 1 sack, 5 quarterback hurries and 1 pass breakup. In 2006, emerging more as a playmaker, he blocked 2 extra-point attempts in a 45-44 win at Duke, including one with 2:49 remaining in the game after the Blue Devils' final score. He missed a couple of games to a minor ankle sprain. His senior year he finished much stronger with 59 tackles, 9.5 tackles for losses and 3.5 sacks.

Strengths

Kentwan is naturally fluid and fast. Using his size he can collapse the pocket well and can also tie up 2 blockers. He can hold the point and anchor and shows some solid lateral quickness.

Weaknesses

Slow starter, not dominate until late in his career. Techniques lack coming off blocks. Better techniques, with his speed will help him get in the backfield more often. Need more weight on him.

Projection

Due to the number of D-Linemen projected to be drafted in Round 1, Balmer could find himself also going in Round 1 or as low as the top of Round 2.

All of a sudden, everyone is talking about how "beastly" this guy is, when I never even heard of him before 2 weeks ago. OK, he's got good heighth, but some of the best NTs in the NFL are under 6-4. It's when you get low, under your opponent's shoulder pads, that you get leverage, and win the battle. I'm not saying he won't make a fine DT, but right now he looks more like a 3-4 DE.
