Overview

Painter has been a 3 year player at Purdue. Will leave most likely in the top 5 in career passing statistics. Really looks the part when evaluating quarterbacks at the next level. His senior year has been a disapointment to all, however he has recently showed some improvement and hopefully will come back 100% from the shoulder injury suffered in the loss to Minnesota on Oct. 25.

Strengths

Measurables-has arm, and mechanics to play at the next level. Has made all the throws in college. Mechanically sound. Painter reads the action well and is deadly accurate when given the time to set his feet and deliver -- two traits perfectly suited to a Joe Tiller offense executed almost exclusively out of the shotgun. When pressured, however, Painter has historically been prone to mistakes, causing some concern with scouts as to how well he may be able to transition a pro-style offense at the next level. He has faced top flight defensive backs ,and until recently has shown consistent improvement from year to year.

Painter has a fairly similar makeup to Kyle Orton only shorter with a stronger arm sort of a combination of Orton's athletic ability and Brees' arm.

Weaknesses

Has shown some mental lapses. Ran a wide open offense that inflated his stats. Also he has worked only out of the shotgun. Didn't make a lot of plays on his feet. Does he have the head for the next level?

His struggles of late can largely by attributed to his separated right(throwing)shoulder. However even prior to that he seems to have shown the effects of losing that he lost dynamic receivers Dustin Keller and Dorien Bryant to the NFL.

Though he has an arm like Brees and is closer to as tall as Orton, he does not see throws and reads as well as either of them.

Projection

Again, has a lot of great tools to work with at the next level. Doesn't look to be a starter at the next level, but may backup for a while and eventually work his way in. Late rounder(5th-7th round) or priority UDFA.
He is likely to have a Patrick Ramseyesque career.
