Overview

Demarcus is a red-shirt sophomore who considered declaring for the 2008 draft, but opted to return to school. We suspect his contemplating the idea has to do with his suspension from his team's bowl game vs. WVU as a result of a shoplifting arrest, thus putting him deep into Coach Stoops's doghouse. Demarcus was rated the No. 11 player in the country and theNo. 1 DT in the country coming out of Kimball H.S. in Dallas by ESPN. He was also named a Parade All-American and a 2004 U.S. Army High School All-American. DeMarcus was the Dallas Morning News Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. He totaled 79 tackles, including 25 for loss, and 17 sacks as a senior and also forced 11 fumbles, recorded 68 tackles and 17 sacks his junior year. He was named Class 4A All-State and the Dallas area defensive player of the year as a junior. Has been clocked at 5.2 seconds in the 40-yard dash and bench presses 405 pounds and squats 550 pounds.

Strengths

Very solid in the gap. A rock to move. Shows some ability to slip blocks and penetrate. Good footwork. Hard worker in spurts. Can hold his own without being blown out even when double-teams at the college level. Young with upside.

Weaknesses

Very immature both as a player and as a person. The consummate boom or bust type. Inconsistent. Doesn't seem to want it all that badly. Needs lots of technique work. Will have to go to a very patient coaching staff. Does not have a real burst to finish the deal on the pass rush. May only be a one-gap guy. Hobbled by a knee injury, but played through it.

Projection

If Oklahoma wins the National Title, he may decide to leave school early, something he contemplated after last season. Probably will be a third round pick, but his past issues may cause him to slide some.
