OverviewCJ Spiller contemplated entering the 2009 NFL Draft, where he likely would have been a top pick, but chose to return for his senior season and showcased even more excitement in his game. An AP first team All-American as an all-purpose player, Spiller scored in every game this season, usually from a good distance from the goal line. The explosive Spiller had more than 1200 rushing yards (5.6 ypc) and scored 12 times. He added another 4 TDs receiving, 1 passing, and another 5 TDs as a return specialist (1 PR, 4 KR). And he did all of this while nursing toe and hamstring injuries. He saved his best work for last, as he rushed for 4 TDs and more than 230 yards on 20 carries.
StrengthsSpiller's biggest asset is his speed and quickness. He's a threat to score as a runner, receiver, punt returner, and kick returner. Spiller is an elusive ball carrier who turns the corner quickly and is deadly in the open field. He's also willing to run it between the tackles, hitting the hole quickly and running through arm tackles. Spiller offers even more as a receiver. He runs good routes, tracks the ball well even downfield, and catches it quickly. He can change directions with little loss of speed and accelerates to top speed immediately. As a returner, his speed and vision are extraordinary and he can find the seams and take it to the house (with regularity).
WeaknessesSpiller is clearly not a power back. He's much less effective between the tackles than you'd like. He bounces things to the outside far too often and often runs more laterally than downfield. Spiller also has shown some troubling durability issues throughout his career and hasn't always been able (willing?) to play through them.
ProjectionSpiller is going to be one of the first two or three backs selected in the draft. He's just too much of a scoring threat to be ignored. He's not going to carry the load like Chris Johnson has done, but he should be even more effective/dangerous than Felix Jones is, and both of them were taken in the mid-late first round. Look for Spiller to go in the same area of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Date/Time: 01/19/2010 - 2:23PM CST Predicted Round: Round 1 CJ is the most complete back in this draft. He is more than adequate in pass pro, and his ability to run receiver routes and catch the ball helps as well. His versatility makes him a top-five talent. User: NinerFan85 Date/Time: 12/8/2009 - 11:03PM CST Predicted Round: Round 1 Makes big play after big play. User: 72beastgc Date/Time: 10/22/2009 - 11:35AM CDT Predicted Round: Round 1 C.J. is in my mind the best RB in the draft. His speed is great, but I think people overlook his ability to break tackles. So far he has proven to me that he can be a feature back. User: MeanJoeGreene75 Date/Time: 07/27/2009 - 5:20PM CDT Predicted Round: Round 1 Chris Johnson has paved the way for him to be even considered a 1st round RB. He has alot to prove this season Rate This Player |
