Stats

Overview

Kicker with a very strong leg and can hit from 60+. Shows decent accuracy, but must improve consistency as a senior. A real sleeper candidate coming into his senior season. In 2007 he was 6/9 from 50 yards and beyond. He hit 5 FGs in a 15-13 win during the season (including a 62 yarder and a 53 yarder). In another game (a 16-14 win), Doerfler hit from 50, 52, and 53.

Started 2008 with a 56-0 loss to UT-Martin where he didn't get a single PAT or FG attempt. Doerfler did punt 9 times for a 43.6 average.

Strengths

Big leg. He has the strength to hit from distance. Good drive and follow-through on kicks. Can also drive the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. Former soccer athlete who transitioned to football. Has raw potential and should only improve as he hasn't been kicking long enough to develop bad habits (muscle memory). Versatility is a plus as he is able to punt, though he's more of an emergency punter at the NFL level than a true punting prospect.

Weaknesses

Doerfler needs to show that he can be more consistent (with all kicks, short and long), especially from the right side of the field.

Projection

If Doerfler was playing for Ohio State, he'd be held in higher regard than Mike Nugent (drafted in 2nd round of 2005 NFL Draft), but he plays in the complete obscurity of the NAIA. I reckon he'll still find his way onto the radar screens of the NFL though and wind up getting drafted in April of 2009.
