Overview

Horatio Benedict Blades is a fiery, emotional true MIKE who never takes plays off, is 100% dedicated to football, and should push most current starting NFL MLBs for playing time early. An outstanding leader with great NFL bloodlines (father is Bennie Blades, both uncles played professionally as well.) H.B. is on the watch lists for the Bednarik, Lott, Lombarsi and Nagurski trophies. First team all-Big East two years running. Senior Bowl invitee.

Strengths

Compact and physical. Strong at the point of attack. Scrapes off blocks and fills very well. A true force in the running game. Decisive and fairly instinctive. Never gives up and will not let anyone around him give up either.

Weaknesses

Lacks size. Can be too quick to commit to the run and overruns plays--especially draws. Size presents limitations in pass defense. Is not very fluid in drops. Can be fooled. Not the fastest LB in the draft, and some NFL backs will run past him.

Projection

Too much ability, productivity, character and "want to" to be ignored early in the draft.

Blades is a great run stopper, but a little weak in coverage. Definitely not gonna set the turf on fire with his speed, but don't look at a forty time, this guy is always going to be around the ball. His height is obviously a concern, but all I have to say is Dat Nguyen.

Potential replacement for Ted Johnson in NE's 3-4 defense. I know ted Johnson left the team in 05, but they haven't been able to refill his position since. Tedy Bruschi could be replaced by Buster Davis, or Paul Posluszny.

He is an absolute force against the run, great instincts and form tackles, punishes WR's coming over the middle. However he is a bit slow and struggles in coverage IMO. Best in zone, a liability in man unless its against a slow TE. The slowness could come from that crappy field he has to play on. Maybe not a 4-3 MLB but I think he would be a great Buck ILB in a 3-4. Falls becuase of lack of speed, coverage liability.
