OverviewAyers is a bit of a one-year wonder who was named as the most outstanding defensive player at the recent Senior Bowl. 32 1/2 arms, hands 9 7/8.
At the Combine he ran 4.80 and looked good in position drills, but was not among the leaders in any of the other drills. LATE NOTE: At the Tennessee Pro Day he worked out as a LB as well as a DE in position drills, kept most of his Combine numbers and turned in a 4.46 short shuttle and a 7.07 3-cone. StrengthsHas good size for a defensive end. Explosive edge rusher who plays with an intensity rare for his position. Also plays the run well. Causes constant problems for his OT. Can be looked at as a possible conversion guy (OLB). Position versatility and post-season workouts have endeared him to NFL scouts.
WeaknessesNot a tremendously feared pass rusher because he has an inconsistent motor and he is not all that strong. Can be steered and redirected while charging. Probably only a 2 down lineman at the next level. Some character concerns remain regarding the possible reasons why he was not an impact performer prior to the 2008 SEC season. Good, but not great, size and size potential. Slightly overaged.
ProjectionHis impressive Senior Bowl performance will have seen him rise up to the mid-round range. Mike Mayock has him way over-rated now, and as a result he is very likely to be over-drafted.
