OverviewEric is a graduate of Carrol City H.S. in Miami, Fl. He was considered the top pass rusher in the state of Florida during his senior season in 2002. Eric tallied 90 tackles and 14 sacks as a senior defensive end, even though he missed half the season with an injury. As a junior in 2001, Moncur racked up 92 tackles, 20 sacks and recovered three fumbles. Coming out of high school, Moncur was ranked as the 42nd best defensive lineman in the country by SuperPrep, and was a SuperPrep All-American. He was also named the nation's 17th best defensive end by Tom Lemming's Prep Football Report and was a member of the Palm Beach Post Florida Top 20 and listed as the No. 18 player in Florida on the Orlando Sentinel Florida Top 100.
Took the entire 2002 and 2003 season off, and enrolled at Miami for the 2004 season during which he redshirted. During he RS freshman season in 2005, he played quite a bit and strated two games due to injuries to starters. He was named to the ACC's all-freshman team that year, and tallied 22 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 sack and 2 FRs. In '06, Eric tallied 23-2-1-1 and broke up 2 PBUs while adding 9 QBHs. He started just three times that season, though he was part of a rotation at DE. In 2007, his first as a starter, he racked up 48-11.5-6 and established himself as a force to be considered for the '10 draft. LATE NOTE: Was granted a medical redshirt for the 2008 season and will return for a 6th year of eligibility this fall. StrengthsCompact and explosive. Gets under the OT's pads, and spins around him. Has a variety of moves. Plays with some nastiness. Relentless pass rusher, who may not finish with a sack, but still affects the QB. Can stack and shed pretty well for a 250-pounder. Has enough pass rushing skill to be considered a solid 3rd-down pass rushing specialist at the next level. Could also be a weakside DE in a 4-3 scheme. Has some similarities to the Broncos' Elvis Dumervil, but is slightly less effective as a pass rusher, while perhaps being a tad better at setting the edge. Strong.
WeaknessesAn over-aged prospect who has not really ever done it consistently at even the college level for a full year. Was not playing in mid-2008 as a result of leg injury. Undersized for DE and not flexible enough for a transition to OLB. Lack of versatility reduces his value somewhat, but the NFL still places a large premium on players who can get after the QB, and that is Eric's forte. Can get washed by OTs who can lock well. Is never going to be a really good point setter, or more than a 3rd down rusher in most schemes. Lacks the frame to add bulk.
