South Carolina's Profile for Fred Bennett

South Carolina has become something of a CB factory in recent years with names like Dunta Robinson, Sheldon Brown, and Johnathan Joseph making an impact in the NFL. Fred Bennett should be the next in that line, although he's not quite as athletic as the others.

Fred Bennett is an enticing blend of size, speed, experience, and production at the corner position. He understands the game well and takes good angles to the ball. He's going to be more effective in a Tampa-2 defense than one that calls for tight man coverage. When he is in man coverage, he uses his hands very well to check the receiver, but he prefers to keep the play in front of him where he can read and react and use his speed to close on the receiver.

Bennett isn't a blazer and because of it, leaves a big cushion to prevent getting beat deep. His backpedal is a bit to upright and clunky and he doesn't possess the loose hips to turn on a dime. While he has very good ball skills, his hands are stone-like at times, although he's able to knock the ball away well enough. Bennett is not the greatest tackler, but it's more an issue of form than fear.

Bennett is flying under the radar of many draft experts right now, but he's an ideal fit for a Tampa-2 defense and should go anywhere from the late-2nd to mid-3rd rounds. Anything later than that and he's a steal.
