OverviewMichael Griffin, one of the top safety prospects in the 2007 class, is originally from Bowie HS (Austin, TX). At Bowie, he played at a high level on both sides of the ball, garnering All-Central Texas honors at both running back and defensive back. He was also a gifted sprinter, posting personal bests of 10.64 (100m) and 22.10 (200m).
After choosing Texas over offers from Oklahoma and Texas A&M, he made his mark early. Griffin led the team in special teams tackles, and he was also a valuable reserve at safety for both his freshman and sophomore years. As a junior, he earned a starting spot, and his production started to catch up to his athletic ability. He has lead the team in tackles the last two season, tied the school record for blocked punts, and earned first team All-Big 12 honors. StrengthsGriffin is a prototypical NFL cover safety. He has excellent ball skills for the position. He has good leaping ability and good recovery speed, allowing him to make plays on the ball in deep coverage. He is one of the best players I've seen when it comes to angles. He always takes the correct path to the ball carrier, allowing him to play faster than his timed speed. He is a solid, willing tackler. He has above-average agility and acceleration for a free safety, giving him the ability to cover slot receivers in man-to-man.
He is a excellent special teams player, showing the same determination and effort that he does playing defense. He is adept in the kicking game. He has fantastic timing and instincts, which have translated into numerous blocked punts during his career. WeaknessesHe isn't a powerful tackler. He may not matchup well against stronger tight ends and running backs. He only has average size and straight-line speed.
ProjectionGriffin will be selected in the first half of the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Date/Time: 03/14/2007 - 7:25PM CDT Predicted Round: Round 2 Griffin has been an exciting player for one of the top college teams in the country. He's a special teams ace as well, which helps his chances of success in the NFL. I think he has the ability to be a good safety in the league, but I wonder if he will ever be a disciplined receiver that sticks to his assignments.
