Overview

Terrell Whitehead, Norfolk State, has been named to the Walter Camp FCS All-America Team for the 2009 college football season as selected by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Whitehead is NSU’s second-ever Walter Camp All-American and first since linebacker Kevin Talley in 2004. In the process, Whitehead becomes NSU’s first-ever three-time FCS All-American. He was named to The Sports Network’s All-America third team as a sophomore in 2007 and as a junior in 2008.

Also Whitehead became NSU’s first-ever three-time All-MEAC pick last week. He was second on the team with 70 total tackles and tied for the MEAC lead with five interceptions this season. He returned those picks for 130 yards, including one touchdown. Whitehead, who spearheaded the MEAC’s top pass defense, added four pass deflections, three tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week twice, both coming after the final two games of the year.

He was a 2009 Buck Buchanan Award Finalist, finishing 15th in the voting this season he had 70 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 8 yards lost, 1 sack, 5 interceptions, 130 interception return yards, one touchdown, 4 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 11 games.

Whitehead lead a Norfolk State defense that ranks sixth in FCS. The senior led the team in interceptions, including a career-high two picks and 10 tackles against Delaware State. He picked up four tackles, a pass breakup and returned an interception for 57 yards against Bethune-Cookman. Whitehead racked up seven tackles and a pass breakup against North Carolina A&T, and forced and recovered a fumble against Winston-Salem State. This is Whitehead's second appearance on the Buchanan Award list. He was on the preseason watch list in 2008

Strengths

Whitehead has the size, speed and football IQ that NFL teams seek, he has was also a starting point guard in basketball at Kempsville High in Virginia Beach, Va., and hoops helped Whitehead sharpen his ability to see and analyze the entire football field defensively.

He is a fluid athlete who stood out in early drills at the Russell Athletic Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Bowl. Showing in the change-of-direction drills where prospects move back and forth while moving laterally in a "W" pattern according to coaches' commands that he has the hip and foot quickness to cover.

Weaknesses

Has not been asked to be isolated in coverage very often and will need to add about 10 pounds of muscle to his sinewy frame.

Projection

Anywhere from the 4th to the 6th is likely, should he get invited the the combine and light it up he'll have an outside shot at the late 3rd.
