Overview

Hakeem was a highly recruited and broadly acclaimed high school football player coming out of Independence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina back in 2006.

As a true freshman at UNC in 2006, Hakeem saw regular action right away and put up 39-660 and 5 TDs. In 2007, he bumped that up to 74-958-5. In 2008, he really busted out and showed that he was an elite receiver ready for the 2009 NFL Draft putting up 68 catches good for 1,222 yards with 12 TDS.

LATE NOTE: Hakeem added 14 pounds between the NFL Combine and the UNC Pro day which raised quite a few eyebrows. He did not re-run, keeping his Combine 40-speed numbers but did do 4.43 in the short shuttle and 6.96 in the 3-cone drill.

Strengths

Fearsome and fearless. Enough speed to run past defenders and enough shiftiness to deke them out of position. Fluid and tall. Very young with a lot of upside. Surprisingly good technique for one so young. Can beat the press and can split double coverage. Will get you YAC. Very good hands.

Weaknesses

Can still use a little time in the weight room and some more pattern development. Has had some minor injury issues from time to time. May not be all that willing to play with pain. Could develop into a prima donna if not managed. Could bust if he is expected to walk in from day one and be "the man." Not a world class speed guy.

Projection

2nd rounder who could rise with an impressive personal workout or two before the draft.

He will probably wait one more year to go pro, but either way he will be late 1st-early 2nd

Watching this bowl game now against West Virginia, and Nicks is going his thing. He made a behind the back catch and caught the defender off guard. He could go in the first with teams biting on guys that they really really want. His combine will be very important.
