OverviewKam Chancellor was a decorated QB and FS in HS and also played basketball. He was recruited to Virginia Tech as a QB, but moved into a CB position as a true freshman. He really started to make his mark as the starting rover in 2007, piling up 79 tackles, good for 4th on the team, while picking off a pass and adding a TFL and half a sack. Moved back to FS in 2008 and really emerged as one of the best in the country. Had a similar season, stat-wise, as a senior in 2009, but the season was marked by early inconsistency and late success.
StrengthsChancellor is right there with USC's Taylor Mays as far as possessing the size/speed ratio to be an elite safety. He has very good ups and flexibility. He can hang with almost any receiver and can lay the lumber when he comes up in run support. Athletic, fast and tough. Possesses outstanding strength and has the size and bulk to play SS and even WLB if needed, yet his atheticism and speed make him an ideal FS. He's a leader on and off the field and is a hard-worker.
WeaknessesChancellor is inconsistent in his play. At times, he appears to be undisciplined, especially in run support. He allows the offense to dictate and will wait for the big hit instead of working through blockers to make a sure tackle. FS would be his slot, as he needs to be free to roam and use his athleticism to make big plays. Much like USC's May's, however, he fails to make the big plays that would be expected of a player with his physical attributes. May never mature into an elite NFL product, but there are no physical constraints to his doing so.
ProjectionIn a draft that's deep with safety talent, Kam Chancellor could go as early as the second round or as late as the late third or early fourth in the 2010 NFL Draft.
