Overview

Greg is a 2005 graduate of Oscar Smith High School in Chesepeake, VA where he was a QB and safety. He was named a postseason All-American by SuperPrep, which also rated him the No. 15 quarterback in the nation and the No. 8 player in the state of Virginia. Boone passed for 1,285 yards, rushed for 949 yards and accounted for 35 touchdowns as a senior. He was also named first-team all-state by both The Associated Press and the VHSCA and was rated the No. 5 player in the state by The Roanoke Times. Greg was also named the Southeastern District Offensive Player of the Year after taking Oscar Smith to its first outright district title in 40 years and a 10-0 regular season record. He accounted for 334 of the Tigers' 335 yards in a 40-39 loss to Landstown in the Eastern Region Division 6 championship game. Greg was named to PrepStar's postseason All-Atlantic Region team and was listed first-team All-Tidewater by The Norfolk Virginian-Pilot and first-team all-district at quarterback and second-team all-district at defensive back and punter as a senior. Greg was also a first-team All-Tidewater selection at defensive back as a junior.

At Va Tech, Boone redshirted in 2005 and acted as the scout team QB. He accepted the change to TE as a RS Freshman in '06 and caght 5-68-1. In 2007, he tallied 11-167-0 and played special teams. Really breaking out in 2008 as a RS Jr., as this is written.

Strengths

Versatile performer who is a former HS QB and can purportedly throw the ball 70 yards. Has been used this year at VA Tech in certain packages as a running QB. Rumbles with the ball and bowls people over. Surprisingly good hands. Can reach up and extend for the ball despite his dimensions. Has a shot to be an excellent blocker. Looks like an OG, and, at times, run blocks like one. Versatility really adds to his value. Is a special athlete because of what he can do with his size.

Weaknesses

Not a fluid route runner. Not fast enough to consistently stretch the seam. Not a polished blocker despite having the ideal body for being a good one. Good at lots of things but terrific in none.

Projection

4th round if he comes out in '09. Perhaps higher if he comes out in '10.

LATE NOTE: Greg decided to return for his senior season and did not declare for the 2009 NFL draft.

He's played QB in the "wild turkey" offense and runs with a lot of power
