Overview2009: Another solid year with 61 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and an interception following last season which put him on the map.
2008: He played 12 games with 12 starts, while leading all Aggie defensive lineman in tackles with 57, recorded 14 ½ tackles for loss, three sacks and had three quarterback hurries, led the team in tackles for loss, had both a forced fumble and an interception to round things out. He recorded 55 tackles, nine for loss in his career at Grand Rapids CC, as a high school standout at MLK, he earned second-team Detroit News and honorable mention all-Metro, he was often compared to Brandon Graham. StrengthsHe hustles is very instinctive and plays with correct leverage and pad, it's clear he's had good coaching and listens. He makes very effecticve uses of his bull rush and uses reliable instincts to make plays on screens and draws. Herring shows the needed strength at the point to hold the edge on his side.
WeaknessesHe is not very diverse in his pass rush moves and he seems to lack elite burst off the edge.
ProjectionWhile it's not clear if Herring is explosive enough to be a pure pass rusher at the next level or if he can play standing up. He is clearly deserving of a chance as a PUDFA due to his productivity and since he has played some MLB in the past.
