OverviewHighly decorated MVC talent who has put up some very fine statistics for the team that almost started off the 2009 season with a "BANG" heard 'round the world, as they came a hair's breadth away from defeating Orange Bowl participant, Iowa.
In 2006, James was a part time player, mostly at OLB, and put up respectable numbers for the length of playing time, recording 26 tackles, 3 TFLs and a sack. In 2007, his line improved to 57-8-3.5 as he became a full time starter at DE. In 2008, he improved again to 69-18-10. Despite being double-teamed much of the 2009 season, he still put up a very respectable 48-14-10.5. Also made a nice showing at the East-West Shrine Game, especially with an important sack of West QB Max Hall of BYU. StrengthsStrong enough (bench 440, 550 squat) and big enough to remain as a 4-3 DE, but also has enough flexibility to be looked at as a possible 3-4 OLB where he has some experience. Played well in big games at one of the FCS's finest schools. Very productive in college (180-43-25). Can really bend the corner and get after the QB. Finishes the deal when rushing. Has some moves. Has some nice versatility to his overall package. Solid at the POA in the run game. Smart, personable, coachable and will be a fine teammate. Explosive despite the lack of an elite get off, 40-time. Does it with desire, when motivated.
WeaknessesLacks outstanding first step and burst. Not a speed guy. Needs to be coached up and add some fine-point technique work. May be a bit of a 'tweener at the next level. Will not get up and bat too many balls (average VJ.) Disappears for stretches in some games. A little stiff and rocked up for the pass drops.
Projection5-6th rounder. Solid pick with little upside or downside.
