OverviewA 2009 BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD CANDIDATE FINALIST: Jeremy Maddox, Alabama A&M, Senior,Defensive End,finished 2009 with: 41 total tackles, 24 solo stops, 16.5 tackles for loss, 75 yards lost, 12 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 10 quarterback hurries in 11 games.
Maddox paced Alabama A&M's 17th-ranked defense and helped the Bulldogs to an East Division title and a spot in the SWAC championship game. The senior was tied for second nationally in sacks and tied for 10th in tackles for loss. Maddox recorded a season-high six tackles against Jacksonville State and three sacks against Tuskegee. He forced fumbles in wins over Hampton and Tuskegee and tied a career-high with four quarterback hurries in a 13-5 win over Jackson State that gave the Bulldogs the head-to-head tiebreaker heading into the regular season finale. This is Maddox's first appearance on the Buchanan Award list. An undersized DE who played LDE, the way he plays and his frame reminds some of Dwight Freeney, due to his ability to fire off the line of scrimmage. StrengthsWhile not very tall, he is very quick off the edge; he has excellent strength (30 reps) with the ability to maintain leverage once he gets to the corner; also has a great motor; is very sudden at the snap and can get up field within steps making the QB step up in the pocket. He possesses the type of flexibility and body control to stay upright while contorting his body to dip under and around to outflank and flatten the edge around opposing OTs. Very productive 4-3 College DE who has worked with Robert Mathis, and will remind you some of the former A&M star.
WeaknessesHas not shown that he can play in space as an OLB, unless he goes to a team that uses him like Dumervil he might struggle to find a home. A bit of one-trick pony, sho must be allowed to go after the QB. Not overly stout at the POA.
ProjectionMaddox has a future in the NFL but it will have to be with the right team and scheme. 6-th rounder who could go a round higher with a great Pro Day (on 3-8-10) or go undrafted if he doesn't do well there.
