OverviewSam is a 2005 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia who almost went to Delaware along with JMU teammate Arthur Moats, but instead terrorized the Blue Hens for three years. At Woodrow Wilson, Sam was named First-team all-district and All-Tidewater, and was also second-team all-region.
Sam redshirted in 2005 at JMU. In 2006, he was in the defensive tackle rotation and started once, tallying 14 tackles (5 solo, 1.5 for loss.) In 2007, he made nine starts and played in each game with 37 tackles (16 unassisted) 8.5 TFLs, and 6.5 sacks. In 2008, Sam's line was 17/25, with 12 TFLs, 6 sacks, 6 hurries. He also garnered honorable mention All-America honors by College Sporting News and was named third-team All-CAA. His senior year in 2009, Sam was voted Second Team All-CAA and he finished the season with 66 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. StrengthsIntense. Hard worker. Ties up two blockers at the FCS level. Has some moves on the pass rush. Moves better than many DTs and might be looked at first as a 4-3 DE. He would be fine setting the edge as a DE conversion. A pinball that just keeps on bouncing off blockers, and redirecting his charge. Chases laterally like a DE. Refuses to stay wired to blocks. Versatility.
WeaknessesWill not overpower NFL guards if left at DT. Can only be a UT if left inside. Will not be a force collapsing the pocket or rushing the passer from the inside at the next level. Benefited from solid surrounding talent at an average LOC. Not all that effective even at the FCS level when hemmed in and asked to slug it out with the offensive linemen across from him. Often over penetrates, overruns plays, and doesn't always diagnose things all that well. Probably strictly a back up as a DT, and has not proven he can play DE.
ProjectionPriority UDFA.
