OverviewChris is a 2005 graduate of Beaverhead County High School (MT) who was a first team all-state selection in 2002, 2003, and 2004 and an honorable mention pick as a freshman. His high school football team won the state “A” football championship in 2003. His prep football coach was Terry Thomas, former (1978-80) Griz cornerback and punter.
Redshirted in 2005 at Montana. Played in the first game in 2006, and then was injured the rest of the year. As a RS Sophomore in 2007, Chris saw action in a few games, shuffling between guard and tackle. In 2008, he finally began to fulfill some promise, playing in all 16 games and starting 11--four at left tackle and seven at right tackle. He was also named an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference that year. In 2009, he started every game at ROT, made marked improvements in his play and was named first-team all Big-Sky Conference. StrengthsGreat size and size potential. Could easily carry 330 pounds without losing much athleticism. Has a similar package, athletically, to last year's Sebastian Vollmer, a 2nd round pick of the New England Patriots, but has yet to put it all together technique/effort wise. Fairly athletic for such a big man, and has a fairly impressive upside. An absolute stone wall in close quarters and when flanked closely by other blockers. Has only played ROT in college, and may have to stay there, but feet are certainly adequate for that position. Most of his deficiencies are correctable elements due to lack of experience and pro coaching. Former basketball player.
WeaknessesDefinitely a project at this stage who has loads of work to do to make it. Punches at air at times. Does not shuffle laterally well enough yet, and can be beaten by counter moves and stunts. Does not maintain a wide base in pass pro and can be shoved backward. Seems to lack some motivation, though he has improved every year at Montana. May lack lateral quickness, and that is not a very easily corrected element. Rises slowly from his stance at times. Overextends, and gets jerked to the ground, or even loses balance on his own, and is thus on the ground too much. He also presents that narrow stance, and can be sidestepped frequently. Feet are pretty good for an ROT candidate, and is likely never going to be an LOT. Needs dance lessons. Gets good depth quickly on his pass drops, but is not always under control when he arrives.
ProjectionPriority UDFA with loads of upside who is a huge project at this stage of his development.
