OverviewJared Odrick began getting significant playing time as a sophomore in 2007 before suffering a pair of injuries (broken hand, dislocated ankle) that ended his season. In 2008, he returned successfully from injury and anchored a defensive line that was among the best in the nation. As a senior in 2009, he really stepped up his game and posted career highs in sacks (7) and TFLs (11). Odrick was invited to the Senior Bowl and really played well against some highly regarded competition.
StrengthsOdrick possesses exceptional size and strength. His height and long arms make him an ideal candidate to play the 5 technique in a 3-4 defensive front. Odrick is powerful in his upper and lower body, and has a mean bull rush. He also can get penetration with a nice swim move. Against the run, he frequently faces double teams, but has the anchor to hold the point of attack and uses his hands well to disengage from the blockers to get to the ball carrier. He also possesses a good burst from the snap to penetrate and get after the QB from the 3 tech. Is able to jolt the offensive lineman with a powerful punch and get them off balance. Odrick is a hustler who plays to the whistle and has added value because of his versatility and ability to play a number of positions on the defensive line.
WeaknessesWhile Odrick has nice explosiveness, he's not particularly quick and struggles to change direction easily. He's much better in confined areas and struggles a bit in space. He'll often play too high and lose the leverage battle to shorter interior linemen. He also has to do a better job of keeping his legs clean. Odrick also had a rep of dogging it some early in his collegiate career and had an off-field issue after his junior season.
ProjectionOdrick has steadily climbed the draft boards as scouts have recognized his versatility, size, and power. He seems to have learned from an arrest prior to his senior season and has shown maturity since then. He frequently dominated his opponents in Senior Bowl practices and has secured himself a late first or early second-round draft position in the 2010 NFL Draft.
