Overview

3 year starter at Stanford. OPOY for the Pac 10 in 2009. 311/ 1736 yards, 26 TDs heading into his bowl game.

Strengths

Big hard running back who has surprisingly good jump cut ability. Bulls through the line and will not be brought down by arm tackles. Has surprising speed and was able to hit the home run several times on long runs. Trucks over the safeties and corners who try to tackle him. Able to catch the ball smoothly when given a chance.

Weaknesses

Has been a featured back in college and will have to adjust to the reduced roll. Needs to show he has the speed to get to the corner at the next level. Raw as a blocker.

Projection

2nd to 3rd round.

Inside: Power back with a nice burst into an inside hole. Some vision and quick enough feet to pick through traffic and find a running lane. Effective in the I-formation and reads his fullback blocks well. Tries to fall forward on every run, often getting three or four extra yards once wrapped up by multiple defenders. Keeps both arms wrapped tight around the ball when in traffic, but put the ball on the ground too often as a senior (five fumbles) due to over-use. Not a big cutback-and-explode threat. Runs hard but won't blow up defenders in the hole like some elite power backs. Outside: Has good straight-line speed for his size. Doesn't own a breakaway gear but is fast enough to get outside and make it hard for safeties to get the angle. Switches the ball to outside hand. Won't make a tackler miss with great elusiveness, but can cut outside or inside blocks on the edge to get into space. Shows potential running zone plays, with patience and a better cut upfield than expected. Breaking tackles: Can spin off, bounce off or sidestep a defender near the line of scrimmage. Keeps his feet moving and runs with a good lean, allowing him to rack up yards after contact. Uses a solid stiff-arm to keep smaller defenders from cutting him down. Blocking: Has the size and strength to succeed in pass protection. Lowers his pads to pick up blitzers up the middle and anchors well, but is inconsistent sustaining the block. Works hard to block defenders downfield or prevent defenders from chasing down his quarterback, cutting them if necessary. Receiving: Good hands as a receiver, and can adjust to poor throws and snatch the ball with his hands. Not overly elusive after the catch, but will muscle through defensive back tackles on swing passes and pound through traffic on middle screens. Good feet to get in and out of routes and tightrope the sidelines.

The best Power Running Back in the Country, easily the best in the Draft. Has all the tools to be successful: Speed, very good hands, great explosion, and can flat make DBs and LBs miss in the open field. I would he can out run 80% of the LB and 50% to 60% of the DBs on shear speed. Those he can't out run he can out power, or make this hesitate before they come in on him, which negates what ever speed advantage some have. Of course he can be caught from behind, but by that time he has a huge run anyway. People question is catching, which is unfair, as he catches all that is thrown his way and does very well after the catch. (note: compare his YPC against other top backs like Ingram) Harbuagh's system doesn't use RBs in the pass offense that much, but note that Gerhart was the 4th leading catcher on the team.

I've taken the time to watch the film. I agree that he is best as an H-Back type such as a LeRon McClain or Leonard Weaver. He is a good power back, and very good in space when he gets his hands on the ball. It bothers me though that as a son of a coach, he is not more developed in pass pro and route running. That being said, he will make a good pro.

I think a team takes a chance on Gerhart within the top 75. I think he'll have to make it as a FB though becuase he's too slow as an NFL RB.

Much more athletic than some will give him. He plays CF for the Stanford baseball team. Doesn't have great speed, but once he gets going has decent quickness. CDS has him projected at only a 4.65 40-time.....that's kind of worrisome. He reminds me a bit of Marion Barber (who also was a very good baseball player). Barber lasted to round 4 and is not a Pro Bowler. Thing is, Barber ran a 4.48 40 at the combine. Gerhart needs to be at worst in the 4.5 range. I think he can get it when he's in baseball mode. He's having such a great year I can't see him falling past the 4th round no matter what time he runs. 3rd round is possible....but a bad 40-time will likely push him into the top of the 4th round. Not a bad spot though. Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs, and Leon Washington all went in the 4th round and have enjoyed pretty solid NFL careers to this point.

Will make a great FB/Goalline Back. He's a big, physical back whose punishes tacklers, has a good second effort after contact, and has some speed once he gets into space.

I can see teams use him in many different ways. Kinda like LaRon McClain or Brian Leonard he can be a full back at times and running back other times. He could even play some H back. A west coast offense team would be a great fit for him.
