OverviewPalmer was honored as a first-team All-ACC player in 2009. He's a former All-Academic award winner as well. He finished his senior season (his third as a starter) with 43 receptions for 507 yards and 4 TDs. He was second only to Jacoby Ford in each of those statistical categories.
StrengthsSmart player who has been a reliable and durable contributor to the Clemson offense. He's an adequate receiving tight end who understands how to get open by recognizing defenses and finding the holes. He's a sure-handed receiver who can make the tough catch. He's also a very good blocking tight end, especially in-line. He's effective at getting outside the end and sealing the edge. He also has the strength to turn the ends and wash them out of the play. Uses his limited physical assets to their full advantage. Overachieving player.
WeaknessesPalmer is a very limited athlete who doesn't possess the speed to be featured in a passing attack. He's not a threat to stretch the defense. Can really only be used as an outlet receiver. Palmer loses effectiveness as a downfield blocker and will often fail to engage moving targets.
ProjectionA team that runs 21 personnel often could definitely use a player like Palmer. He's similar in many respects to NFL players like Jeff Dugan and Ben Hartsock. While it's unlikely that he'll be drafted, he's got the ability to contribute as a backup TE for a lot of years and should be of value to an NFL team. He could hear his name in the final stages of the 2010 NFL Draft, but is more likely an UDFA who gets a number of calls right after the draft.
